Moretele River
The Pienaars River is a river in South Africa. It is a tributary of the Crocodile River. A short section of this river is known as the Moretele River (i.e. approximately 20 km section between Haakdoornbult and the Klipvoor Dam). Tributaries of the Pienaars River include the Moreletaspruit (alternative spellings: Morelettaspruit, Moreleta Spruit). Note that the above-mentioned Moretele river section is 60 km away from the Moreletaspruit and these two should not be confused with one another. Course It originates east of Pretoria, City of Tshwane, Gauteng Province, flowing northwards into Roodeplaat Dam (north of Mamelodi), which is also fed by the Hartbeesspruit and its tributary, the Moreletaspruit. Dinokeng Game Reserve
The Dinokeng Game Reserve is a large wildlife sanctuary in the province of Gauteng, South Africa, and can be accessed via the arterial N1 route. It is a 40-minute drive from Pretoria or some 75 minutes from the O. R. Tambo Airport and Johannesburg. The reserve is the only wildlife sanctuary in Gauteng that offers Big five game, free walks, and is available for visitors to explore. It covers an area of approximately 21,000 hectares. Its name, Dinokeng, is derived from the language of the baTswana and baPedi people, and is translated as “a place of rivers”. Tswaing Crater
Tswaing is an impact crater in South Africa that is accompanied by a museum. It is situated 40 km to the north-west of Pretoria. This astrobleme is 1.13 km in diameter and 100 m deep and the age is estimated to be 220,000 ± 52,000 years (Pleistocene). The impactor is believed to have been a chondrite or stony meteorite some 30 to 50 m in diameter that was vapourised during the impact event. Morokweng impact structure, another crater of chondrite origin, lies north-west of Vryburg. Etymology The name ''Tswaing'' means "place of salt" in Tswana and the crater was also formerly known in English as ''Pretoria Saltpan crater'' and in Afrikaans as ''Soutpankrater''. An algal bloom or algae bloom is a rapid increase or accumulation in the population of algae in freshwater or marine water systems. It is often recognized by the discoloration in the water from the algae's pigments. Klipvoor Dam
Klipvoor Dam is a concrete gravity type dam located on the Moretele River, 55 km north of Brits, North West, South Africa. It was established in 1970. The main purpose of the dam is to serve for irrigation and its hazard potential has been ranked as high (3). The Klipvoor Dam is one of the good fishing spots of the Borakalalo Game Reserve, located north of the dam. Apies River
__NOTOC__ The Apies River is a river that flows through the city of Pretoria, South Africa. Its source is located just south of the city (south of Erasmus Park) and it flows northward until it drains into the Pienaars River. The word "Apies" is Afrikaans for small monkeys and is a reference to the historical abundance of vervet monkeys on the Apies River banks. Nguni-speaking people, who became known as the Ndebele, are thought to have been the first people to recognise the suitability of the Apies River valley as a place to put down roots. The Ndebele encountered indigenous nomadic Khoisan people, which they called abaTshwa (the People who are Ignored), occupying the area. The Ndebele named the river 'Tshwane' which means 'Place of the abaTshwa'. Pienaarsrivier is a town some due north of Pretoria, north of the Pienaars River. The river is named after Petrus Gerhardus Jacobus Pienaar Pienaar is a well-known Afrikaans surname, derived from the French '' Pinard''. It was brought to South Africa in 1688 by Huguenot settlers traveling with the Dutch East India Company.
