Morača (monastery)
The Morača Monastery ( sr, Манастир Морача, Manastir Morača) is a Serbian Orthodox Church, Serbian Orthodox List of Serbian monasteries, monastery located in the valley of the Morača River in Kolašin, central Montenegro. It was founded in 1252 by Stefan Vukanović Nemanjić, Stefan Vukanović, of the Serbian Nemanjić dynasty. It is one of the best known medieval monuments of Montenegro. History The founding history is engraved above the western portal. Stefan Vukanović Nemanjić, Stefan, a son of the Grand Principality of Serbia, Grand Prince of Zeta Vukan Nemanjić (r. 1190-1207), founded the monastery in 1252, possibly on his own lands (appanage). The region was under the rule of the Nemanjić dynasty and the founder himself was grandson of Stefan Nemanja, father of the Serbian statehood. Kolašin (Montenegrin Cyrillic: Колашин, ) is a town in northern Montenegro. It has a population of 2,989 (2003 census). Kolašin is the centre of Kolašin Municipality (population 9,949) and an unofficial centre of Morača region, named after Morača River. History Ottoman period Kolašin, fortress-settlement, was raised by the Turks in the middle of the 17th century in the namesake village in Nikšić district ( nahiye). The village of Kolašin was first mentioned in the Sultan's Decree in 1565, by which the deceased Grand Duke Miloš was replaced by his son Todor. The Turkish town was named after the former village of Kolašin. The Đurđevi Stupovi Monastery ( sr, Манастир Ђурђеви ступови, Manastir Đurđevi stupovi, lit. "Tracts of St. George") is a Serbian Orthodox monastery near the town of Berane, in northeastern Montenegro. It was founded by Stefan Prvoslav, the nephew of Stefan Nemanja, in 1213. Since 2019, it was the cathedral monastery of the Eparchy of Budimlja, until the end of the 17th century. Studenica Monastery
The Studenica Monastery ( sr, / ), ) is a 12th-century Serbian Orthodox monastery situated southwest of Kraljevo and east of Ivanjica, in central Serbia. It is one of the largest and richest Serb Orthodox monasteries. Stefan Nemanja, the founder of the medieval Serb state, founded the monastery in 1190. The monastery's fortified walls encompass two churches: the Church of the Virgin, and the Church of the King, both of which were built using white marble. The monastery is best known for its collection of 13th- and 14th century Byzantine-style fresco paintings.
