Moore Glacier
Moore Glacier ( da, Moore Gletscher) is a glacier in northern Greenland.Google Earth Administratively it belongs to the Northeast Greenland National Park. Between 2006 and 2010 there was an automatic weather station in the glacier. The glacier was named by Robert Peary after Mr. Charles Moore, who convinced US President William McKinley to keep supporting Peary's Polar ventures in the face of the United States Department of the Navy opposing further explorations. Geography The Moore Glacier is the largest of the valley glaciers located in the area of the easternmost subranges of the Roosevelt Range. It flows roughly in a northwestern direction from the southeast and stretches between the H. H. Benedict Range to the southwest and the Bertelsen Glacier to the northeast. Robert Peary
Robert Edwin Peary Sr. (; May 6, 1856 – February 20, 1920) was an American explorer and officer in the United States Navy who made several expeditions to the Arctic in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. He is best known for, in April 1909, leading an expedition that claimed to be the first to have reached the geographic North Pole. Explorer Matthew Henson, part of the expedition, is thought to have reached what they believed to be the North Pole narrowly before Peary. Peary was born in Cresson, Pennsylvania, but, following his father's death at a young age, was raised in Portland, Maine. He attended Bowdoin College, then joined the United States Coast and Geodetic Survey as a draftsman. He enlisted in the navy in 1881 as a civil engineer. Peary Land is a peninsula in northern Greenland, extending into the Arctic Ocean. Stjernebannertinde
Stjernebannertinde (Starry Banner Peak) is the highest mountain in the H. H. Benedict Range, a subrange of the Roosevelt Range, Northern Greenland. The peak was first climbed in 1996 by the members of the American Top of the World Expedition (ATOW). A glacier terminus, toe, or snout, is the end of a glacier at any given point in time. Although glaciers seem motionless to the observer, in reality glaciers are in endless motion and the glacier terminus is always either advancing or retreating. The location of the terminus is often directly related to glacier mass balance, which is based on the amount of snowfall which occurs in the accumulation zone of a glacier, as compared to the amount that is melted in the ablation zone. The position of a glacier terminus is also impacted by localized or regional temperature change over time. Bertelsen Glacier
Bertelsen Glacier ( da, Bertelsen Gletscher) is a glacier in northern Greenland.Google Earth Administratively it belongs to the Northeast Greenland National Park. Between 2006 and 2010 there was an automatic weather station near the glacier. The glacier was mapped with accuracy by Lauge Koch during an aerial survey in May 1938. It had previously not been seen by Robert Peary during his 1902 exploration of the area that put the adjacent Moore Glacier in the map. The glacier was named in honour of Aage Bertelsen, who had taken part in the 1906–1908 Danmark Expedition. Geography The Bertelsen Glacier is one of the main glaciers in eastern Peary Land. The Roosevelt Range or Roosevelt Mountains ( da, Roosevelt Fjelde) is a mountain range in Northern Greenland. Administratively this range is part of the Northeast Greenland National Park. Its highest peak is the highest point in Peary Land. A valley is an elongated low area often running between hills or mountains, which will typically contain a river or stream running from one end to the other. Most valleys are formed by erosion of the land surface by rivers or streams over a very long period. Some valleys are formed through erosion by glacial ice. Automatic Weather Station
An automatic weather station (AWS) is an automated version of the traditional weather station, either to save human labour or to enable measurements from remote areas. An AWS will typically consist of a weather-proof enclosure containing the data logger, rechargeable battery, telemetry (optional) and the meteorological sensors with an attached solar panel or wind turbine and mounted upon a mast. The specific configuration may vary due to the purpose of the system. The system may report in near real time via the Argos System, LoRa and the Global Telecommunications System, or save the data for later recovery.
