Benjamin Mooers
Benjamin Mooers (April 1, 1758 – February 20, 1838) was a military veteran of both the Revolutionary War and War of 1812, and a politician, serving in the New York State legislature. He also served as a sheriff of Clinton County, New York in between the wars. Early life Benjamin Mooers was born in Haverhill, Massachusetts to Abigail and Benjamin Mooers on April 1, 1758. In 1773 Mooers started an apprenticeship under John White, a merchant and importer in Haverhill. He worked with White until the Revolutionary War began, when Mooers enlisted as a volunteer in the Continental Army. Later life In 1783 he settled in the vicinity of Plattsburgh, New York, a frontier settlement at the time. Mooers was the sheriff of Clinton County and a presidential elector in 1808. Calvin Mooers
Calvin Northrup Mooers (October 24, 1919 – December 1, 1994), was an American computer scientist known for his work in information retrieval and for the programming language TRAC. Early life Mooers was a native of Minneapolis, Minnesota, attended the University of Minnesota, and received a bachelor's degree in mathematics in 1941. He worked at the Naval Ordnance Laboratory from 1941 to 1946, and then attended the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, where he earned a master's degree in mathematics and physics. At M.I.T. he developed a mechanical system using superimposed codes of descriptors for information retrieval called Zatocoding. He founded the Zator Company in 1947 to market this idea, and pursued work in information theory, information retrieval, and artificial intelligence. Mooers is a town in Clinton County, New York, United States. The population was 3,592 at the 2010 census. The town is named after Benjamin Mooers, an early settler. The town forms part of the northern border of Clinton County and is northwest of Plattsburgh. History The region was first settled . The town of Mooers was formed from part of the town of Champlain in 1804. In 1830, part of the town was used to create the new town of Ellenburg. Geography According to the United States Census Bureau, Mooers has a total area of , of which is land and , or 0.33%, is water. The northern town line is the Canada–US border with Quebec, Canada. The Great Chazy River flows eastward through the town. U.S. Route 11 runs east–west through Mooers, intersecting with the northern terminus of New York State Route 22 in Mooers village.
