Monumental (Barcelona Metro)
Monumental is the name of a station in the Barcelona Metro network. It takes its name from the former La Monumental bullring located in Eixample Dret, the northern part of the central districts of Barcelona, Barcelona district of Eixample. It's served by Barcelona Metro line 2, L2 (purple line), and opened in 1995, along with the other stations of the first section of the line to be built (from Sant Antoni (Barcelona Metro), Sant Antoni to Sagrada Família (Barcelona Metro), Sagrada Família). It's situated under Carrer de la Marina between Carrer de Consell de Cent, Consell de Cent and Carrer de la Diputació, Diputació, and can be accessed from both sidewalks of Marina. Barcelona Metro
The Barcelona Metro (Catalan and Spanish: ) is an extensive network of rapid transit electrified railway lines that run mostly underground in central Barcelona and into the city's suburbs. It is part of the larger public transport system of Barcelona, the capital of Catalonia, Spain, with unified fares under the (ATM) scheme. As of 2014, the network is operated by two separate companies: (TMB) and (FGC). It is made up of 12 lines, combining the lines owned by the two companies. Two lines, L9 and L10, are being built at present, with both lines having different sections of each opened between 2009 and 2018. They are due to be fully completed in 2026. The Plaza de Toros Monumental de Barcelona, often known simply as La Monumental (), is a bullring in the city of Barcelona, Catalonia, Spain. It was the last bullfighting arena in commercial operation in Catalonia. It was inaugurated in 1914 under the name ''Plaza de El Sport'' and was soon expanded and given its current name in 1916. It is situated at the confluence of the '' Gran Via'' and ''Carrer Marina'' (Marina Street) in the Eixample district. It has a capacity of 19,582 within 26 rows of lines, boxes, and stands on the first floor inside and an upper gallery surrounding the building. It was the last place in Catalonia where bullfights were held (in 2011) since the Parliament of Catalonia passed a law banning bullfighting events on 28 July 2010 that came into force in 2012. Bullring
A bullring is an arena where bullfighting is performed. Bullrings are often associated with the Iberian Peninsula, but they can also be found through Iberian America and in a few Spanish and Portuguese ex-colonies in Africa. Bullrings are often historic and culturally significant centres that bear many structural similarities to the Ancient Rome, Roman amphitheatre. Common structure The classic bullring is an enclosed, roughly circular amphitheatre with tiered rows of stands that surround an open central space. The open space forms the arena or ''ruedo'', a field of densely packed crushed rock (''albero'') that is the stage for the bullfight. Eixample Dret
The Eixample (; ) is a district of Barcelona between the old city (Ciutat Vella) and what were once surrounding small towns (Sants, Gràcia, Sant Andreu, etc.), constructed in the 19th and early 20th centuries. Its population was 262,000 at the last census (2005). Architecture and design The Eixample is characterized by long straight streets, a strict grid pattern crossed by wide avenues, and square blocks with chamfered corners (named ''illes'' in Catalan, ''manzanas'' in Spanish). Districts Of Barcelona
Barcelona, Catalonia, Spain is divided into 10 districts. These are administrated by a councillor designated by the main city council, and each of them have some powers relating to issues such as urbanism or infrastructure in their area. The current division of the city into different districts was approved in 1984. In 2009 Barcelona started using a new division of 73 neighbourhoods (the 10 districts are still in use), a division that was done for a better service from the City Council.
