Monument To Concepción Arenal (Madrid)
The Monument to Concepción Arenal is an instance of public art in Madrid, Spain. Located at the Parque del Oeste, it is dedicated to Concepción Arenal, 19th-century standout jurist and precursor of feminism. History and description The monument was a work by José María Palma Burgos, a sculptor from Granada. It was funded via popular subscription. The sculptural group consisted of a granite basement displaying the seated statue of Concepción Arenal, made of limestone and dressed with a judicial robe, sided to her right flank by an allegory of ''Peace'' cast in bronze, and a symbolization of the ideas of ''Liberty'', ''Justice'' and ''Forgiveness'', sculpted in stone, to her left flank. An inscription at its base reads ("Concepción Arenal. She loved science. She comforted pain"). It was unveiled on 29 May 1934 at the plaza de Ruperto Chapí, located at the Parque del Oeste. Parque Del Oeste
The Parque del Oeste (in English: ''Western Park'') is a park of the city of Madrid (Spain) situated between the Autovía A-6, the Ciudad Universitaria de Madrid and the district of Moncloa. Before the 20th century, the land that the park currently occupies was the main landfill of the city. The park is the initiative of Alberto Aguilera, the mayor of the city at the beginning of the 20th century, who in 1906 requested the layout of a place for walking and relaxation by landscape artist Celedonio Rodrígáñez. It has beautiful sites such as the rose garden, where a rose competition is held every year. One of the monuments in the park is the Temple of Debod, an Ancient Egyptian temple. The Egyptian state donated the temple of Debod to Spain in 1968 as a sign of gratitude for the help provided by Spain in saving the Abu Simbel temples. María de la Concepción Jesusa Basilisa Rodríguez-Espina y García-Tagle, short form Concha Espina (15 April 1869 or 1877 or 1 April 1879 or 15 April 1879 in Santander – 19 May 1955 in Madrid), was a Spanish writer. She was nominated for a Nobel prize in literature twenty five times in twenty eight years. Life María de la Concepción Jesusa Basilisa Rodríguez-Espina y García-Tagle was born in Santander, the seventh of 10 children of Víctor Rodríguez-Espina y Olivares and Ascensión García-Tagle y de la Vega. On 12 January 1893 she married Ramón de la Serna y Cueto, and they moved to Valparaíso, Chile during some years. The marriage had 5 children: Ramón, Víctor, José, Josefina (wife of Regino Sainz de la Maza) and Luis. The couple separated in 1909, and legally in 1934. In 1940 she went blind, but she continued to write. She died at 86, on 19 May 1955 in Madrid. Her best known novel is called That Luzmela Girl (''La niña de Luzmela'') and describes life ...
