Montserrat ( ) is a British Overseas Territories, British Overseas Territory in the Caribbean. It is part of the Leeward Islands, the northern portion of the Lesser Antilles chain of the West Indies. Montserrat is about long and wide, with roughly of coastline. It is nicknamed "The Emerald Isle of the Caribbean" both for its resemblance to coastal Ireland and for the Irish diaspora, Irish ancestry of many of its inhabitants. Montserrat is the only non-fully sovereign full member of the Caribbean Community and the Organisation of Eastern Caribbean States. Elections In Montserrat
Elections in Montserrat take place within the framework of a multi-party democracy and a parliamentary system. The Legislative Assembly is directly elected, and a Chief Minister is selected by the party or coalition with the most seats in the Assembly. Electoral history Elections were held in Montserrat in the 19th century, but with a severely limited franchise; in 1837 only 114 of the 7,119 residents of the island were eligible to vote. The partially elected Legislative Assembly dissolved itself in 1866 and was replaced with a wholly appointed body, which remained in place until 1937 when constitutional reforms reintroduced elected members. The reorganised legislature had nine seats; four elected, three held by government officials and two by nominees appointed by the Governor. Mary Rose Tuitt
Mary Rose Tuitt (December 25, 1930 – 2005) was an educator and politician from the island of Montserrat, a British Overseas Territory in the Caribbean. She was the first woman to serve as a government minister in that country. Life and work The daughter of Edgar Peters and Sarah Ryan (née Dorsett), she was born Mary Rose Peters in Kinsale, Montserrat. She studied at the Erdiston Teachers' Training College in Barbados from 1953 to 1955. When she returned to Montserrat after her studies, she was named head teacher at St. Patrick's school. She studied for an additional year at the University of Oxford Institute of Education. In 1958, she married Adolphus Tuitt. She resigned in 1968 after being passed over for the position of inspector of schools. Tuitt was transferred to the Ministry of Social Services but resigned that position after she realized it was a dead-end position. John Osborne (Montserrat Politician)
John Alfred Osborne (27 May 1936 – 2 January 2011) was a chief minister of Montserrat. He first came to that position in November 1978, as a member of the People's Liberation Movement, and continued until losing legislative council elections on 10 October 1991. By 2001 he had switched parties, joining the New People's Liberation Movement. Under his leadership, the NPLM won 7 of 9 seats in legislative council elections on 2 April 2001, and he served as chief minister from 5 April 2001 until 3 June 2006 when he resigned after elections in which his party was defeated. A major issue for his government has been the continuing recovery of the island of Montserrat after a volcanic eruption which devastated the southern part of the island, burying the capital city of Plymouth in ash and forcing its population to flee, in many cases off the island due to lack of housing. History The party was established in 1970 by Percival Austin Bramble, son of Chief Minister and leader of the Montserrat Labour Party (MLP) William Henry Bramble.
