Montrose, Angus
Montrose ( , gd, Monadh Rois) is a town and former royal burgh in Angus, Scotland. Situated north of Dundee and south of Aberdeen, Montrose lies between the mouths of the North and South Esk rivers. It is the northernmost coastal town in Angus and developed as a natural harbour that traded in skins, hides, and cured salmon in medieval times. With a population of approximately 12,000, the town functions as a port, but the major employer is GlaxoSmithKline, which was saved from closure in 2006. The skyline of Montrose is dominated by the steeple of Old and St Andrew's Church, designed by James Gillespie Graham and built between 1832 and 1834. Montrose is a historic mansion in Holly Springs, Mississippi, United States. Location It is located at 335 East Salem Avenue in Holly Springs, a small town in Northern Mississippi. History The mansion was commissioned by Alfred Aaron Brooks (1802-1888), a plantation owner, as a wedding present for his daughter. It was completed in 1858. It was designed in the Greek Revival architectural style, as a two-storey mansion with red bricks and white Corinthian columns. Inside, there is a circular staircase with a niche. Later, it was home to the Holly Springs Garden Club, with an arboretum on the grounds. The house may be toured during the annual Annual Pilgrimage and Home Tour. The proceeds go towards the restoration of the mansion. Architectural significance As a contributing property to the East Holly Springs Historic District, it has been listed on the National Register of Historic Places since April 20, 1983. Montrose is a city in Henry County, Missouri, United States. The population was 384 at the 2010 census. History Montrose was founded in 1871, spurred by the building of the railroad through that territory. The town was named after Montrose, in Scotland. A post office called Montrose has been in operation since 1870. Among the early industries represented in the newly incorporated town were a flour mill, a grain elevator, several grain warehouses, a bank, two hotels, two hardware and implement stores, two furniture stores, three dry goods stores, four blacksmiths, two barber shops, three millinery shops, two newspapers, and a livery stable. The Montrose Savings Bank was organized June 4, 1895 and began operating the following day. The first directors were R.H. Dugan, E.W. Blew, O.P. The Charter Township of Montrose is a charter township of Genesee County in the U.S. state of Michigan. The population was 6,224 at the 2010 census, a slight decrease from 6,336 at the 2000 census. The City of Montrose is surrounded by the township, but is politically and administratively autonomous. Montrose Charter Township is located in the northwest corner of Genesee County, bisected nearly down the middle by the Flint River. Once part of the surrounding Montrose Township, the city itself incorporated in 1980, and both are now administered autonomously. History Seymour W. Ensign, originally from New York then Saginaw, became the first white residents of present-day Montrose in 1842. Montrose is a historic slave plantation located at Clarksville, Howard County, Maryland, United States. It was built in 1844 by Dr. William H. Hardey, prominent physician and secessionist in the American Civil War. One of Dr. Hardey's six children married John Randall, brother of James Ryder Randall, the author of "Maryland, My Maryland!" The house is basically a five-bay-wide, two-bay-deep, and -story stone structure with two dormers set into the gable roof on its south elevation and wide brick chimneys set into its east and west walls. A shingled -story cottage lies north of Montrose with barns and outbuildings lying northwest of them both. Montrose resides next to Huntington Farms, a house built by his brother John T. Hardey. The farm has been subdivided to 4.2 acres for residential construction, with the gravesite for the family and slaves located between two pipe-stem driveways for the development. The Effingham County portion of Montrose is part of the Effingham Micropolitan Statistical Area, while the small section that lies in Cumberland County is part of the Charleston– Mattoon Micropolitan Statistical Area. Geography Montrose is located at (39.165768, −88.378386). Most of the village lies in northern Effingham County, although a small portion extends into southern Cumberland County.
