Montreal Winter Carnival Ice Hockey Tournaments
The Montreal Winter Carnival Ice Hockey Tournaments were a series of annual ice hockey tournaments held in the 1880s in conjunction with the Montreal Winter Carnival, in Montreal, Quebec, Canada. First held in 1883, these tournaments are considered to be the first championship ice hockey tournaments and the predecessor to the first championship ice hockey league, the Amateur Hockey Association of Canada. History In 1883, the Montreal Amateur Athletic Association was asked to add sports to the events to be held with the Montreal Carnival. The association was affiliated with the Montreal Snow Shoe Club. Along with the McGill Hockey Club, they organized a four-team tournament, played partly outdoors on the Saint Lawrence River. The trophy for this tournament is on display at the McCord Museum in Montreal. In 1884, the location changed to a rink made on the McGill University grounds. It was moved indoors subsequently. McGill Redmen
The McGill Redbirds (formerly the McGill Redmen) and McGill Martlets are the varsity athletic teams that represent McGill University in Montreal, Quebec, Canada. Team name According to Suzanne Morton, a professor of history at McGill, the name "McGill Redmen" was first adopted in 1927, initially intended to reflect James McGill's Scottish heritage and hair color. Frederick Arthur Stanley, 16th Earl of Derby, (15 January 1841 – 14 June 1908) styled as Hon. Frederick Stanley from 1844 to 1886 and as The Lord Stanley of Preston between 1886 and 1893, was a Conservative Party politician in the United Kingdom who served as Colonial Secretary from 1885 to 1886 and Governor General of Canada from 1888 to 1893. Andrew Shearer (lumber Merchant)
Andrew "Andy" Shearer (January 26, 1864 – February 6, 1944) was a Canadian lumber merchant and amateur ice hockey player. He was the father of Hollywood actresses Norma and Athole Shearer and sound designer and recording director Douglas Shearer, and an older brother of zoologist Cresswell Shearer. Biography Andrew Shearer was born in Montreal, Quebec in 1864 to James Traill Shearer and Eliza Shearer (née Graham). His father was born in Rosegill near Dunnet in Caithnesshire in northern Scotland in 1822 and his mother was born in Montreal in 1827. James T. Shearer was a carpenter and lumber manufacturer and Andrew Shearer later worked as a lumber merchant and as a director of the James Shearer Company in Montreal. Halder Kirby
Halder Smith Kirby (October 3, 1863 – July 12, 1924) was a Canadian ice hockey player, doctor and druggist. He was a co-founder of the Ottawa Hockey Club, later to become the Ottawa Senators. He played with the team from 1883 until 1894. His brother Chauncey Kirby also played for Ottawa. Personal life Kirby was born in Ottawa in 1863, the third of six children born to Thomas H. and Mary Kirby. There were three boys, Chauncey, Halder and Richmond and three girls, Elizabeth, Emma and Laura. Thomas is listed in the 1872 census as a bank manager, and in the 1881 census as a city foreman. Halder Kirby is listed in the Ottawa Directory of 1889-90 as a 'druggist' with 'Kirby Brothers' along with Richard Kirby. Playing career Halder Kirby helped found the Ottawa HC in 1883. Jack Kerr (ice Hockey)
John "Jack" Kerr was a Canadian ice hockey player and athlete. He was one of the founders of the Ottawa Hockey Club for which he played from 1883 onwards. He was a member of the Ontario championship team in 1891, 1892, 1893 and the Canadian championship team of 1892. He played the forward position. Hockey career Along with Halder Kirby, Kerr was visiting Montreal during the 1883 Montreal Winter Carnival where he witnessed games of the outdoor hockey tournament. According to the ''Ottawa Citizen'', one said to the other "that we could beat those fellows" and the other agreed. The two, upon their return to Ottawa, organized the Ottawa Hockey Club along with Frank Jenkins. Kerr would play with Ottawa until the 1893 season, winning several Ottawa and Ontario championships and winning the Canadian championship in 1892. Frank Jenkins (ice Hockey)
Frank Maurice Stinson Jenkins (July 6, 1859 – December 5, 1930) was an early amateur ice hockey player. He was a founder, and the first captain of the Ottawa Hockey Club (Ottawa HC) of 1883. He was also the founder in 1894 of Ottawa's first full-size orchestra, the Ottawa Amateur Orchestral Society. Family Born in Kingston, Ontario, Jenkins moved to Ottawa as a boy and resided in Ottawa ever since. He was a son of Charles W. Jenkins and Carolyn Counter Jenkins. He was the grandson of Kingston mayor John Counter. In 1892, Frank married Annie Lampman, a concert pianist and sister of Archibald Lampman. Frank and Anne had one son, Frank T. and three daughters, Dorothy, Ruth and Marjorie. Their daughter Dorothy Jenkins McCurry was a noted vocal soloist and teacher in Ottawa. The Montreal Football Club was a Canadian football team based in Montreal, Quebec that played in the Quebec Rugby Football Union from 1883 to 1906 and in the Interprovincial Rugby Football Union from 1907 to 1915. The Crystal Palace was an exhibition hall built for the Montreal Industrial Exhibition of 1860, originally located at the foot of Victoria Street (one block west of University) between Sainte-Catherine and Cathcart Streets, then relocated to Fletcher's Field. It was used for temporary exhibitions, and in winter, housed an ice skating rink. Construction The building was designed by Montreal architect John William Hopkins. It had an iron framework, a tinned barrel-vaulted nave and two galleries, each twenty feet wide, extending all the way around the interior. Its design was inspired by The Crystal Palace in London.
