Montreal Machine
The Montreal Machine were the sole Canadian team in the World League of American Football (WLAF), a springtime developmental professional league set up by the National Football League (NFL) that played in 1991 and 1992. There were also three European teams and six North America-based teams. Like all WLAF teams, the Machine played American rules football, 11 players per side on a 120-yard field, rather than Canadian rules football of 12 players per side on 150-yard field. The Machine filled a void created by the folding of the Canadian Football League's Montreal Alouettes in 1987. It was the first American football team in Canada since the Montreal Beavers, Toronto Rifles and Victoria Steelers, which all played in the Continental Football League in 1967. The NFL had also played two international preseason games in Montreal in 1988 and 1990 during the Alouettes' absence. NFL Europe League (simply called NFL Europe and known in its final season as NFL Europa League) was a professional American football league that functioned as the developmental minor league of the National Football League (NFL). Originally founded in 1989 as the World League of American Football (or WLAF), the league was envisioned as a transatlantic league encompassing teams from both North America and Europe. Initially, the WLAF consisted of seven teams in North America and three in Europe. Baltimore Stallions
The Baltimore Stallions (known officially as the "Baltimore Football Club" and previously as the "Baltimore CFL Colts" in its inaugural season) were a Canadian Football League team based in Baltimore, Maryland, in the United States, which played the 1994 and 1995 seasons. 1992 Birmingham Fire Season
The 1992 Birmingham Fire season was the second and final season for the franchise in the World League of American Football (WLAF). The team was led by head coach Chan Gailey in his second year, and played their home games at Legion Field in Birmingham, Alabama. They finished the season with a record of seven wins, three losses and one tie (7–3–1) and with a loss against the Orlando Thunder in the WLAF semifinals as a wild card. After a preseason loss to London, the Fire lost their opening game on the road at Sacramento. They then rebounded and went unbeaten over their next four games with wins over San Antonio, Frankfurt and Sacramento in addition to the first tie in league history against London at Wembley Stadium. Birmingham then lost in their rematch at San Antonio before they completed the regular season with four consecutive victories over Barcelona, Montreal, Orlando and Ohio to clinch the final playoff spot. Dee Thomas
Dee Thomas (born November 7, 1967) is a former professional American football defensive back in the National Football League (NFL) for the Houston Oilers, Montreal Machine in the World League of American Football (WLAF) and the Canadian Football League (CFL). He played college football at Nicholls State University and was drafted in the tenth round of the 1990 NFL Draft. Professional career Thomas played for the Houston Oilers during the 1990 season. After the season, Thomas was protected in Plan B, but he did not play for Oilers during the 1991 season. In 1992, Thomas played in the World League of American Football with the Montreal Machine where he earned a contract with the Washington Redskins at the conclusion of the WLAF's 10 game season. 1991 Birmingham Fire Season
The 1991 Birmingham Fire season was the first for the franchise in the inaugural season for the World League of American Football (WLAF). The team was led by head coach Chan Gailey, and played their home games at Legion Field in Birmingham, Alabama. They finished the season with a record of five wins and six losses (5–6), as the North America West division champions and with a loss against the Barcelona Dragons in the WLAF semifinals. The Fire franchise was established in April 1990, and by November 1990 league officials announced play to begin in March 1991. Robert Kula (born August 24, 1967) is a former American football offensive tackle who played college football at Michigan State University and attended Brother Rice High School in Bloomfield Township, Oakland County, Michigan. Don Paul "Suds" Sutherin (February 29, 1936 – January 11, 2022) was a Canadian Football League (CFL) and National Football League (NFL) defensive back and placekicker. He is a member of the Canadian Football Hall of Fame (1992). Playing career Sutherin played college football at Ohio State, and kicked the game-winning field goal in the 1958 Rose Bowl, giving Ohio State its third national championship. He was drafted by the New York Giants in the eighth round of the 1959 NFL Draft and played in the NFL from 1959-1960 for the Giants and the Pittsburgh Steelers.
