Montreal Economic Institute
The Montreal Economic Institute (MEI) is a non-profit research organization (or think tank) based in Montreal, Quebec, Canada. It aims at promoting economic liberalism through economic education of the general public and what it regards as efficient public policies in Quebec and Canada through studies and conferences. Its research areas include different topics such as health care, education, taxation, labour, agriculture and the environment. Its studies are often mentioned in the media. History The MEI was incorporated in July 1987, after being created by a group of Québec intellectuals and businessmen as the continuation of the Institut économique de Paris à Montréal (which was directed by economists Pierre Lemieux). MEI's activities soared in the late 1990s with the nomination of Michel Kelly-Gagnon as executive director. Michel Kelly-Gagnon
Michel Kelly-Gagnon is a Canadian lawyer and businessman born in 1971. He graduated in law from the Université de Montréal and was admitted to the Quebec Bar in 1994. He is currently the president and CEO of the Montreal Economic Institute. Career After practicing law with Colas & Associates, Kelly-Gagnon went into business as an associate oFormatrad an in-house employee training firm. In 1998, he assumed leadership of the Montreal Economic Institute (MEI). The annual budget was $15,000 in 1998 and rose to $1 400 393 by 2005. To achieve this growth, he explained that he raised funds from corporations and wealthy individuals in Canada and the US by offering to represent their interests. ''L'actualité'' is a Canadian French-language news and general interest magazine published in Montreal by Rogers Communications until 2016, then by Mishmash (XPND Capital). The magazine has over a million readers, according to Canada's Print Measurement Bureau, from its circulation which is mainly subscribers. Eighty-six percent of its readership are Québécois. History and profile The magazine was established in 1909 with the name ''Bulletin paroissial''. Its name was changed several times: ''L'Action paroissiale'' (1932), ''Ma paroisse'' (1949), ''L'actualité'' (1960) and ''L'actualité magazine'' (1967). Until 1945 Jesuit Armand Proulx served as the editor-in-chief of the magazine. The Stowers Institute for Medical Research is a biomedical research organization that conducts basic research on genes and proteins that control fundamental processes in living cells to analyze diseases and find keys to their causes, treatment, and prevention. It is located in Kansas City, Missouri adjacent to the University of Missouri–Kansas City main campus. The Institute has spent over 1 billion $US on research. Saint-Jérôme is a provincial electoral district in the Laurentides region of Quebec, Canada that elects members to the National Assembly of Quebec. Its territory corresponds exactly to the city of Saint-Jérôme. It was created for the 2012 election from part of the former Prévost electoral district. Youri Chassin is a Canadian politician, who was elected to the National Assembly of Quebec in the 2018 provincial election. He represents the electoral district of Saint-Jérôme as a member of the Coalition Avenir Québec. Chassin worked as a researcher and economist with the Montreal Economic Institute, in November 2010 to March 2017.
