Montreal Arts Interculturels
Montréal, arts interculturels (MAI) is a multidisciplinary cultural organization of Montreal created in 1999. It is located on Jeanne-Mance Street. It opened in 1999, and exhibits contemporary art, dance, music, theatre, painting, sculpture, and video. The mission of MAI is to facilitate and initiate intercultural relations. Description The MAI is a non-profit organization whose mission is to support and promote intercultural artistic practices in order to enable a dialogue between cultures in Montreal. MAI subsidizes and presents projects in dance, theatre, visual and media arts, spoken word, etc. It accompanies emerging or established artists and particularly supports artists from culturally diverse backgrounds. Madame Gandhi
Kiran Gandhi (born February 21, 1989), also known by her stage name Madame Gandhi, is an American electronic music producer, drummer, artist and activist. Gandhi's music career includes being a touring drummer for artists M.I.A., Thievery Corporation, and Kehlani. Her music and activism focuses on female empowerment and fourth-wave feminism. Karen Tam
Karen Tam (born 1977) is a Canadian artist and curator who focuses on the constructions and imaginations of cultures and communities through installations in which she recreates Chinese restaurants, karaoke lounges, opium dens, curio shops and other sites of cultural encounters. She is based in Montreal, Quebec. Education Tam holds a BFA in Studio Arts and Music from Concordia University and an MFA in Sculpture from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago and a PhD in Cultural Studies from Goldsmiths (University of London). Zab Maboungou
Zab Maboungou is a Franco-Congolese dancer, writer and choreographer. Biography Born in France and raised in Congo-Brazzaville, Maboungou is based in Montreal where she founded the Compagnie Danse Nyata Nyata in 1988. She has since choreographed and performed numerous solo and group works, among which ''Mozongi'' which received the Prix de la danse de Montréal in 2015. Black Theatre Workshop
Black Theatre Workshop (BTW) is a non-profit theater company based in Montreal and is one of the oldest Black English-speaking professional theatre companies in the Canada. It was established by Clarence Bayne and Arthur Goddard, who previously also founded the Trinidad and Tobago association. The Black Theatre Workshop is known for featuring many prominent artistic directors over the years. History Black Theatre Workshop was incorporated in 1971 after its official beginnings in February 1970, and has roots going back to the Drama Committee of the Trinidad and Tobago Association. Nadia Myre
Nadia Myre (born 1974) is a contemporary visual artist from Quebec and an Algonquin member of the Kitigan Zibi Anishinaabeg First Nation, who lives and works in Montreal. For over a decade, her multi-disciplinary practice has been inspired by participant involvement as well as recurring themes of identity, language, longing and loss. Of the artist, Canadian Art Magazine writes, "Nadia Myre’s work weaves together complex histories of Aboriginal identity, nationhood, memory and handicraft, using beadwork techniques to craft exquisite and laborious works." Myre is one of the co-founders of ''daphne,'' the first Indigenous artist-run centre in Québec, along with Skawennati, Caroline Monnet, and Hannah Claus.
