Montour, New York
Montour is a town in Schuyler County, New York, United States. The population was 2,305 at the 2020 census. The town is one of two towns in the county named after Catherine Montour. The Town of Montour is in the southern part of the county and is north of Elmira. History The Seneca village of ''Queanettquaga'', also known by colonial settlers as Catherine's Town, was destroyed by the Sullivan Expedition in 1779. These colonial forces ranged throughout western New York, destroying Iroquois villages as well as their stores of crops. They were destitute when winter arrived. The Town of Montour was first settled by European Americans around 1794 after the American Revolutionary War. They first settled the current village of Montour Falls, named after a waterfall along one edge. This was known by the Seneca as ''Che-qua-gah,'' or "roaring water." Montour Falls is a village located in Schuyler County, New York, United States. The population was 2,714 at the time of the 2020 census. A waterfall at the end of West Main Street gives the village its name. The name "Montour" is derived from Queen Catharine Montour, a prominent Native American woman of Seneca Indian heritage who lived at the village site in the 18th century. The boundaries defining the Village of Montour Falls occur mostly within the Town of Montour, but a small part lies within the Town of Dix. Lake Chillisquaque (also known as Montour Lake) is a lake and reservoir in Montour County, Pennsylvania, in the United States. It has a surface area of 165 acres. The lake is situated on Middle Branch Chillisquaque Creek, which it is named after. Nearby communities include Danville and Washingtonville. The lake has an elevation of above sea level and is up to deep. It has several coves, including Goose Cove, Heron Cove, and Jellyfish Cove. The lake is dammed on its southern side by the Lake Chillisquaque Dam, which is long and high. The metals with the highest concentrations are calcium and iron. Nonmetals such as nitrogen and phosphorus are also found in the lake. It experiences agricultural runoff as well. Lake Chillisquaque is owned by Pennsylvania energy company Talen. Montour Run is a tributary of Fishing Creek in Columbia County, Pennsylvania. It is the last named tributary to join the creek and is long. The stream's watershed has an area of approximately 4.7 square miles and is located in Montour Township, Columbia County and Cooper Township, Montour County. The annual load of sediment in the watershed is , most of which comes from agricultural lands. Minnows live in the stream. A. Joseph Armstrong called the stream "undistinguished" and "not an impressive stream" in his book ''Trout Unlimited's Guide to Pennsylvania Limestone Streams''. Montour Township is a township in Columbia County, Pennsylvania. It is part of Northeastern Pennsylvania. The population was 1,263 at the 2020 census. History The Rupert Covered Bridge No. 56 was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1979. Geography Montour Township is in western Columbia County, bordered on the west by Montour County. The Susquehanna River forms the southern and part of the eastern boundary, and Fishing Creek forms the remainder of the eastern boundary, separating the township from the town of Bloomsburg, the county seat. The unincorporated community of Rupert is in the eastern part of the township, near the mouth of Fishing Creek. The Montour Trail is a multi-use recreational rail trail near Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. It was formerly the Montour Railroad. It has a mostly crushed limestone with partially asphalt surface, appropriate for bicycling, walking, running, and cross-country skiing. Eventually, this trail segment will extend from Coraopolis, Pennsylvania to Clairton, Pennsylvania. The trail is part of a rails to trails project between Pittsburgh and Cumberland, Maryland that makes up part of a trail system between Pittsburgh and Washington, D.C., known as the Great Allegheny Passage. Montour High School is a public high school in Robinson, Pennsylvania, United States. It is the only high school in the Montour School District and serves the suburban towns of Kennedy and Robinson Townships, and the boroughs of Ingram, Pennsbury Village, and Thornburg. Established in 1956, the campus that serves students in grades 9 through 12 opened in 1957. Montour Railroad
The Montour Railroad was a short line railroad company operating passenger and freight service in southwestern Pennsylvania. At its height in the 1930s, the railroad served 27 mines transporting nearly seven million tons of coal annually in Allegheny and Washington Counties. History The Montour Railroad Company was chartered in 1877 as a wholly owed subsidiary of the Imperial Coal Company. The first segment constructed extended from the Pittsburgh and Lake Erie Railroad line at Montour Junction, near Coraopolis, Pennsylvania to the Imperial Coal Company mines at Imperial, Pennsylvania.
