Montgomery County, North Carolina
Montgomery County is a rural county located in the southern Piedmont of the U.S. state of North Carolina. As of the 2020 census, the population was 25,751. Its county seat is Troy. History The county was formed in January 1779, by an act of the North Carolina General Assembly of 1778, from part of Anson County. It was named in honor of Richard Montgomery, an American Revolutionary War general killed in 1775 while attempting to capture Quebec City, Canada. The North Carolina General Assembly of 1779 named James Roper, James Allen, Cornelius Robeson, Samuel Person, and John Collier of Randolph County as the commissioners of Montgomery County and charged them with determining the location for a county seat. They chose what developed as Troy. In 1841, the part of Montgomery County west of the Yadkin River, Yadkin/Pee Dee River became Stanly County, North Carolina, Stanly County. Richard Montgomery
Richard Montgomery (2 December 1738 – 31 December 1775) was an Irish soldier who first served in the British Army. He later became a major general in the Continental Army during the American Revolutionary War, and he is most famous for leading the unsuccessful 1775 invasion of Quebec. Montgomery was born and raised in Ireland. In 1754, he enrolled at Trinity College, Dublin, and two years later joined the British Army to fight in the French and Indian War. He steadily rose through the ranks, serving in North America and then the Caribbean. After the war he was stationed at Fort Detroit during Pontiac's War, following which he returned to Britain for health reasons. In 1773, Montgomery returned to the Thirteen Colonies, married Janet Livingston, and began farming. When the American Revolutionary War broke out, Montgomery took up the Patriot cause, and was elected to the New York Provincial Congress in May 1775. Uwharrie River
The Uwharrie River () is a long river, in the Piedmont region of central North Carolina in the United States. It is a tributary of the Pee Dee River, which flows to the Atlantic Ocean. Course The Uwharrie River rises in northwestern Randolph County, just south of the city of High Point, and flows generally southwardly into northwestern Montgomery County, through the low Uwharrie Mountains and the Uwharrie National Forest. It flows into the Pee Dee River 8 mi (13 km) east of the city of Albemarle as part of the Lake Tillery reservoir, across the Pee Dee from Morrow Mountain State Park. Above the mouth of the Uwharrie, the Pee Dee is known as the Yadkin River. In its upper course, the Uwharrie collects a minor tributary named the Little Uwharrie River, which flows for a short distance through northwestern Randolph County. Lake Tillery
Lake Tillery is a reservoir between Falls Reservoir and Blewett Falls Lake in the Uwharrie Lakes Region of North Carolina. It is entirely within Stanly County and Montgomery County, NC. The lake was created by impounding the Pee Dee River, which is created by the confluence of the Yadkin River and the Uwharrie River several miles to the north. Norwood, NC in neighboring Stanly County uses as its town motto "Gateway to Lake Tillery". James B. Garrison Bridge The James B. Garrison Bridge is the only crossing of the Pee-Dee-Yadkin River between Badin Lake and Norwood. The bridge carries traffic on North Carolina Highway 24/ 27/ 73 across the river and Lake Tillery from Stanly County to Montgomery County. Drowning Creek
The Lumber River, sometimes referred to as the Lumbee River, is a river in south-central North Carolina in the flat Coastal Plain. European settlers first called the river Drowning Creek, which is the name of its headwater. The waterway known as the Lumber River extends downstream from the Scotland County- Hoke County border to the North Carolina-South Carolina border. Soon after crossing into South Carolina, the Lumber River flows into the Little Pee Dee River, which flows into the Pee Dee River, or Great Pee Dee River.
