Montechiaro d'Asti (Piedmontese: ''Monciàir'') is a town and ''comune'' (municipality) in the Province of Asti in the Italian region Piedmont, located about east of Turin and about northwest of Asti. Montechiaro d'Asti borders the following municipalities: Camerano Casasco, Chiusano d'Asti, Cortanze, Cossombrato, Cunico, Montiglio Monferrato, Soglio, and Villa San Secondo. Montechiaro is home to a notable example of Romanesque architecture in the Lower Montferrat, the church of St. Nazarius and Celsus (11th and 12th centuries). Giovanni Pastrone
Giovanni Pastrone, also known by his artistic name Piero Fosco (13 September 1883 – 27 June 1959), was an Italian film pioneer, director, screenwriter, actor and technician. Pastrone was born in Montechiaro d'Asti. He worked during the era of the silent film and influenced many important directors in the international cinema with Cabiria, such as David Wark Griffith, in his ''The Birth of a Nation'' (1915) and'' Intolerance ''(1916). Martin Scorsese believes that Pastrone's work in Cabiria can be considered as the invention of the epic movie and he deserves credit for many of the innovations often attributed to D.W. Griffith and Cecil B. DeMille. Among those was the extensive use of a moving camera, thus freeing the feature-length narrative film from "static gaze". He died in Turin on 27 June 1959. Santi Nazario E Celso, Montechiaro D'Asti
The Church of Saints Nazarius and Celsus ( it, Chiesa dei Santi Nazario e Celso) is a Catholic church near Montechiaro d'Asti, Italy. It is located on the side of a hill called ''Bric San Nazario'' and is easily visible in the countryside thanks to its tall bell tower and the chromatic effect due to the alternating stripes of bricks and sandstone. It is an important example of the Romanesque architecture of Montferrat. It was founded in around 1130 on the site of a previous settlement called ''Mairano'', which was later abandoned in the 13th century. People moved to Montechiaro, which is about 2 km far, and the church went on a slow decline.
