Monte Carlo Millions
The Monte Carlo Casino, Monte Carlo Millions was the first ever poker tournament to be staged in the city-state of Monaco. The inaugural event was completed on 12 November 2004. Apparently birthed out of the preceding explosion of Texas Hold 'em popularity, it was conceived of and sponsored by Prima Poker. The field was limited to 80 players and the buy-in was US$14,000. The majority of the competitors were world famous professionals, with the remainder of the field online satellite winners and lesser known professionals. The 2004 event was dominated nearly start to finish by the world's top tournament player, Phil Ivey. With three players remaining, however, he was outdrawn by Jani Sointula, who would go on to take the title and US$400,000 first prize. In November 2005, the second MCM tourney featured a 120 player field and a $25,000 buyin. The Monte Carlo Casino, officially named Casino de Monte-Carlo, is a gambling and entertainment complex located in Monaco. It includes a casino, the Opéra de Monte-Carlo, and the office of Les Ballets de Monte-Carlo. The Casino de Monte-Carlo is owned and operated by the Société des bains de mer de Monaco, a public company in which the Monaco government and the House of Grimaldi, ruling royal family have a majority interest. The company also owns the principal hotels, sports clubs, foodservice establishments, and nightclubs throughout the Principality. Poker Tournament
A poker tournament is a tournament where players compete by playing poker. It can feature as few as two players playing on a single table (called a "heads up poker, heads-up" tournament), and as many as tens of thousands of players playing on thousands of tables. The winner of the tournament is usually the person who wins every poker chip in the game and the others are awarded places based on the time of their elimination. Texas hold 'em (also known as Texas holdem, hold 'em, and holdem) is one of the most popular variants of the card game of poker. Phillip Dennis Ivey Jr. (born February 1, 1977) is an American professional poker player who has won ten World Series of Poker bracelets, one World Poker Tour title, and appeared at nine World Poker Tour final tables. Ivey is regarded by numerous poker observers and contemporaries as the best all-around player in the world. In 2017, he was elected to the Poker Hall of Fame. Jani Sointula (born 1975) is a Finnish professional poker player from Helsinki. In November 2004, he won the Monte Carlo Millions, defeating fellow countryman Juha Helppi in the final heads-up confrontation to take home the $400,000 first prize. The final table also featured fellow professional Phil Ivey, who finished 3rd and went on to win the event the following year. In March 2005, Sointula finished on the final table bubble of the first European Poker Tour (EPT) Grand Final. Paul Jackson (born 1965?) is an English professional poker player from Birmingham. Early years Prior to poker, Jackson worked as a tax manager for a Chartered Accountant. Poker career Jackson started off playing brag and later played blackjack and roulette in casinos. At one casino, he saw poker being played and picked up the game in 1985, choosing a nickname based on the Carl Weathers film Action Jackson. Jackson is best known as an online poker player (he once won two large online poker tournaments in the same night), but has also made numerous high finishes in major live events.
