The Montana Office of Public Instruction (OPI) is the state education agency of Montana. Elsie Arntzen currently serves as the Montana Superintendent of Public Instruction. The agency is headquartered in Helena. The people of Montana have elected a Superintendent of Public Instruction as one of the five members of the executive branch since 1889. By law, the superintendent has general supervision of the K-12 public schools and school districts. The superintendent also serves as a member of the Land Board, the State Library Commission, and as an ''ex officio'' non-voting member of the Board of Public Education, the Board of Regents, and the Board of Education. Helena (; ) is the capital city of Montana, United States, and the county seat of Lewis and Clark County. Helena was founded as a gold camp during the Montana gold rush, and established on October 30, 1864. Due to the gold rush, Helena would become a wealthy city, with approximately 50 millionaires inhabiting the area by 1888. Elsie Arntzen (born May 7, 1956) is an American educator and politician from the U.S. state of Montana who serves as the Superintendent of Public Instruction of the State of Montana. Prior to this, she was a member of the Montana Legislature. Early life and career In 1992, Arntzen became a 5th grade school teacher for the Billings School District. Montana State Legislature In 2004, Arntzen was elected to Montana House of Representatives for District 53, which includes a portion of Yellowstone County. Denise Juneau
Denise Juneau (born April 5, 1967) is an American attorney, educator, and politician from the U.S. state of Montana who served as the state's Superintendent of Public Instruction from 2009 to 2017. She is a Democrat and the first female Native American elected to statewide office in the United States. Her mother is Mandan, Hidatsa, and Arikara, while her father is Blackfoot. On November 4, 2015, Juneau announced her candidacy for the United States House of Representatives in the 2016 congressional election. Juneau was defeated by incumbent Republican Ryan Zinke in the 2016 general election. Linda McCulloch (born December 21, 1954) is an American politician who is formerly the secretary of state of Montana. She was the first woman to serve in that post. She left her previous post as state superintendent of public instruction due to term limits, which she also reached as Secretary of State.
