Montalba, Texas
Montalba is an unincorporated area, unincorporated community in central Anderson County, Texas, Anderson County, Texas, United States. According to the Handbook of Texas, the community had a population of 809 in 2019. It is located within the Palestine, Texas micropolitan area. History Montalba was given this name when William J. Hamlett, Jr., applied to have a post office established in the community and for the building to be located east of the Trinity River (Texas), Trinity River and south of Beaver Creek (Texas), Beaver Creek as early as December 1881. The nearest post office at that time was in nearby Tennessee Colony, Texas, Tennessee Colony, located west of Montalba. Hamlett named the settlement Montalba, and it is thought to be named this because of the white sand on a mountain located east of the community. Clara Montalba
Clara Federica Montalba (2 August 1840 – 14 August 1929) was a British artist, chiefly known for her watercolour paintings of Venice. She was the eldest of four daughters of the Swedish-born artist Anthony Rubens Montalba, all of whom achieved considerable artistic success, though Clara was arguably the most successful and best-known of the four. Between 1879 and 1889 she exhibited her work at the Grosvenor Gallery, London. An early feminist, in 1886 she was named by Millicent Garrett Fawcett as one of twenty successful and accomplished women who had given "warm help and support" to the movement. In 1892, in recognition of her artistic talent, she was admitted into the Royal Watercolour Society. She died in Venice in 1929.
