Mont D'Ambin Base Tunnel
The Mont d'Ambin Base Tunnel, also known as the Mont Cenis Base Tunnel, is the largest engineering work of the Lyon–Turin rail link project. Once completed, it will facilitate the principal high speed rail link between Italy and France, conveying both high speed passenger trains and rail freight between the two countries. At , that tunnel will be the longest rail tunnel in the world, ahead of the 57.1 km (35.5 mi) Gotthard Base Tunnel. It represents one third of the estimated overall cost of the project and is the only part of the line where work has started. Crossing the Alps between the Susa Valley in Piedmont and Maurienne in Savoie. It has an estimated cost of €8 billion. During September 2016, a key agreement towards the tunnel's construction was reached by France and Italy. Three years later, competitive tenders to perform packaged elements of the construction work were sought. History During 2002, reconnaissance work commenced on the French side. Initia ...

Turin–Lyon High-speed Railway
The Turin–Lyon high-speed railway is an international rail line under construction between the cities of Turin and Lyon. It is intended to link the High-speed rail in Italy, Italian and TGV, French high-speed rail networks and will be long. The core of the project is its international section, which will cross the Alps through the Mont d'Ambin Base Tunnel between the Susa Valley in Piedmont and Maurienne in Savoie. At , that tunnel will be the List of longest tunnels, longest rail tunnel in the world, ahead of the Gotthard Base Tunnel. The estimated total cost of the line is Euro, €25 billion, of which €8 billion is for the international section, which is the only part of the line where work has started. Like the Swiss NRLA project, the line has twin aims of transferring freight traffic across the Alps from trucks to rail to reduce air pollution and CO2 emissions and of providing faster passenger transport to reduce air traffic. The new line will considerably shorten ...

Lyon Turin Ferroviaire
Lyon Turin Ferroviaire (LTF), a subsidiary of Réseau Ferré de France (RFF) and Rete Ferroviaria Italiana (RFI), was the early developer of the joint French-Italian part of the future rail link between Lyon and Turin. It has now been replaced in that role by Tunnel Euralpin Lyon Turin (TELT), with the same staff and leadership. The critical part of this planned line is the Mont d'Ambin Base Tunnel between Saint-Jean-de-Maurienne in France and the Susa Valley in Italy. In November 2007, the European Commission granted €671.8 million (up to 30% of its total value) to the transborder section of the Lyon-Turin link through its multiannual TEN-T program (2007-2013). This contribution of the EU lies within the global financing of €2.1 billion in favor of the transborder section of the Lyon-Turin for 2007-2013 period. Italy and France bring the major part of these financing. See also *NRLA *Brenner Base Tunnel * TAV *TGV *Turin–Lyon high-speed railway The Turin–Ly ...

Yulhyeon Tunnel
The Yulhyeon Tunnel is a railway tunnel in South Korea, which opened in December 2016, and is currently the world's fourth longest railway tunnel at 50.3 kilometers. The tunnel, which consists of a double-track tube, is part of the 61.1-kilometer Suseo–Pyeongtaek high-speed railway that connects Suseo station in the southeastern part of Seoul with the Gyeongbu high-speed railway. The threading into the older high-speed line is in the south of the city of Pyeongtaek. The tunnel itself takes up about 82% of the total new line. The Yulhyeon Tunnel was built using the New Austrian tunnelling method (NATM) and is designed for a maximum speed of 300 km/h. The average cruising speed is about 240 km/h due to the intermediate stop at Dongtan Station in the southern part of the tunnel. Structural issues The major sections of Yulhyeon Tunnel has been built over the seismic fault called Singal Fault, which led the structural stability in question. Korea Rail Network Authori ...

Seikan Tunnel
The Seikan Tunnel ( ja, 青函トンネル, or , ), is a dual-gauge railway tunnel in Japan, with a portion under the seabed of the Tsugaru Strait, which separates Aomori Prefecture on the main Japanese island of Honshu from the northern island of Hokkaido. The track level is about below the seabed and below sea level. The tunnel is part of the standard-gauge Hokkaido Shinkansen and the narrow-gauge Kaikyō Line of the Hokkaido Railway Company (JR Hokkaido)'s Tsugaru-Kaikyō Line. The name ''Seikan'' comes from combining the ''on'yomi'' readings of the first characters of , the nearest major city on the Honshu side of the strait, and , the nearest major city on the Hokkaido side. The Seikan Tunnel is the world's longest undersea tunnel by overall length (the Channel Tunnel, while shorter, has a longer undersea segment). It is also the second-deepest transport tunnel below the sea level after the Ryfylke Tunnel, a road tunnel in Norway which opened in 2019, and the second l ...

Brenner Base Tunnel
The Brenner Base Tunnel (german: Brennerbasistunnel; it, Galleria di base del Brennero) is a railway tunnel under construction through the base of the Eastern Alps beneath the Brenner Pass. Upon completion, it will be the second or third longest railway tunnel in the world, after the Gotthard Base Tunnel in Switzerland and (depending on their relative completion dates) the Mont d'Ambin Base Tunnel between France and Italy. It will run from near Innsbruck, in Austria, to Franzensfeste, in Italy, replacing part of the current Brenner railway. The line is part of Line 1, the Berlin to Palermo route, of Trans-European Transport Networks (TEN-T). The Brenner Pass, in the Alps at the border between Austria and Italy, is one of the most important traffic connections between northern and southern Europe, and the motorway going over it is infamous for its frequent traffic jams. Pollution from transit traffic is a major concern because of the combination of temperature inversion wit ...

Tunnel De Base Du Mont D'Ambin
A tunnel is an underground passageway, dug through surrounding soil, earth or rock, and enclosed except for the entrance and exit, commonly at each end. A Pipeline transport, pipeline is not a tunnel, though some recent tunnels have used immersed tube construction techniques rather than traditional tunnel boring methods. A tunnel may be for foot or vehicular road traffic, for rail transport, rail traffic, or for a canal. The central portions of a rapid transit network are usually in the tunnel. Some tunnels are used as sanitary sewer, sewers or aqueduct (watercourse), aqueducts to supply water for consumption or for hydroelectric stations. Utility tunnels are used for routing steam, chilled water, electrical power or telecommunication cables, as well as connecting buildings for convenient passage of people and equipment. Secret tunnels are built for military purposes, or by civilians for smuggling of weapons, contraband, or people. Special tunnels, such as wildlife crossi ...

Adit
An adit (from Latin ''aditus'', entrance) is an entrance to an underground mine which is horizontal or nearly horizontal, by which the mine can be entered, drained of water, ventilated, and minerals extracted at the lowest convenient level. Adits are also used to explore for mineral veins. Construction Adits are driven into the side of a hill or mountain, and are often used when an ore body is located inside the mountain but above the adjacent valley floor or coastal plain. In cases where the mineral vein outcrops at the surface, the adit may follow the lode or vein until it is worked out, in which case the adit is rarely straight. The use of adits for the extraction of ore is generally called drift mining. Adits can only be driven into a mine where the local topography permits. There will be no opportunity to drive an adit to a mine situated on a large flat plain, for instance. Also if the ground is weak, the cost of shoring up a long adit may outweigh its possible advantage ...
