Monster Raving Loony (play)
''Monster Raving Loony'' is a play written by the British playwright James Graham. It follows the life and exploits of the British rock musician Screaming Lord Sutch, and derives its title from the political party founded and led by Sutch from 1983 until his death in 1997. The play premiered on 6 February 2016 at Theatre Royal, Plymouth and ran for 3 weeks before transferring to Soho Theatre in London, where it ran from 14 May to 18 June. Directed by Simon Stokes, the original cast consisted of Joseph Alessi, Samuel James, Joanna Brookes, Tom Attwood, Jack Brown and Camilla Beeput. All but one of the cast reprised their roles for the London production, with comedian Vivienne Acheampong taking over Beeput's role. The play received generally positive reviews. James Graham (playwright)
James Graham (born 8 July 1982) is a British playwright and screenwriter. His work has been staged throughout the UK and internationally, at theatres including the Bush, Soho Theatre, Clwyd Theatr Cymru and the National Theatre. Biography Graham grew up in Mansfield, Nottinghamshire, and was educated at Ashfield Comprehensive School and the University of Hull, where he studied drama. His first professional play ''Albert's Boy'' was produced by the Finborough Theatre in west London, where Graham became playwright-in-residence. His first major play '' This House'' was commissioned by the Royal National Theatre, where it was critically and commercially acclaimed, transferred to the larger Olivier Theatre, and was nominated for the Olivier Award for Best New Play. Screaming Lord Sutch
Screaming Lord Sutch (10 November 1940 – 16 June 1999), who had his name legally changed from David Edward Sutch, was an English musician and perennial parliamentary candidate. He was the founder of the Official Monster Raving Loony Party and served as its leader from 1983 to 1999, during which time he stood in numerous parliamentary elections. He holds the record for contesting the most Parliamentary elections, standing in 39 elections from 1963 to 1997. As a singer, he variously worked with Keith Moon, Jeff Beck, Jimmy Page, Ritchie Blackmore, Charlie Watts, John Bonham and Nicky Hopkins, and is known for his recordings with Joe Meek including "Jack the Ripper" (1963). The Official Monster Raving Loony Party (OMRLP) is a political party established in the United Kingdom in 1982 by the musician David Sutch, also known as "Screaming Lord Sutch, 3rd Earl of Harrow", or simply "Lord Sutch". Theatre Royal, Plymouth
Theatre Royal, Plymouth, is a theatre venue in Plymouth, Devon. It consists of a 1,300-seat main auditorium, The Lyric, which regularly hosts large-scale musicals, opera and ballet; a 200-seat studio, The Drum; and a 50-seat studio, The Lab. On a separate site, Theatre Royal Plymouth also has a production and learning centre, TR2, featuring rehearsal studios and workshops for the production of set and costumes. Henry Hitchings (born 11 December 1974) is an author, reviewer and critic, specializing in narrative non-fiction, with a particular emphasis on language and cultural history. The second of his books, ''The Secret Life of Words: How English Became English'', won the 2008 John Llewellyn Rhys Prize and a Somerset Maugham Award. He has written two books about Samuel Johnson and has served as the president of the Johnson Society of Lichfield. As a critic, he has mainly written about books and theatre.
