Monroe Station (CTA Red Line)
Monroe is an Chicago "L", "L" station on the Chicago Transit Authority, CTA's Red Line (Chicago Transit Authority), Red Line. The station opened on October 17, 1943, as part of the State Street subway. The station is located in the Chicago Loop, and is open 24/7 service, 24/7. History Monroe station has retained many of its original features from its opening in 1943, such as the officers' cabins, some auxiliary signaling and the Madison-Monroe mezzanine, which is named for the crossing of Madison Street and Monroe Street. Until October 2006, there was a station between Monroe and Lake: Washington (CTA Red Line station), Washington/State station. Washington/State is located near Monroe. It is still possible to walk on the abandoned station platform. In 2009, the CTA put new station wall signs over the old blue station wall signs in order to better direct people to the mezzanines. Monroe is a subway station on the Chicago Transit Authority's 'L' system, serving the Blue Line. It is located in the Chicago Loop, Chicago's downtown district. History Although the work on the station under Dearborn Street began in March 1939, the construction of the Milwaukee-Dearborn Subway and the station was suspended in 1941 because of wartime material shortages. Therefore, commuters had to wait ten years for the station to open. Monroe opened on February 25, 1951, fourteen years after being ordered by the Chicago Rapid Transit Company in 1937. In 1969, the stairs to the northwest corner of Dearborn Street and Monroe Street were closed to allow the construction of the First National Bank Building and Plaza (renamed the Chase Tower) after the completion of a new entry was added in the lower level of the tower to the station. SEPTA Routes 101 and 102, also known as the Media–Sharon Hill Line, are light rail lines operated by the Suburban Transit Division of the Southeastern Pennsylvania Transportation Authority, serving portions of Delaware County. The ''Crescent'' is a daily long-distance passenger train operated by Amtrak in the eastern United States. It operates daily between Pennsylvania Station in New York City and Union Passenger Terminal in New Orleans as train numbers 19 and 20. Major service stops outside the Northeast Corridor include Birmingham, Ala.; Atlanta, Ga.; and Charlotte, N.C. Most of the route of the ''Crescent'' is on the Norfolk Southern Railway.
