Monnett Bain Davis
Monnett Bain Davis (August 13, 1893 – December 26, 1953) was an American diplomat in the early and mid 20th century. Early life Davis was born in Greencastle, Indiana on August 13, 1893. He was named for his maternal grandmother, Mary Monnett Bain, a benefactress of the Ohio Wesleyan University in Delaware, Ohio. He was educated at the University of Colorado, A.B. During World War I, he served in the American Expeditionary Force (AEF) in the United States Army. Diplomatic career Following WWI, Davis entered into the United States Foreign Service and served tours of duty representing American interests abroad as US Consul in Port Elizabeth (1921–23) and Saltillo (1924) and then as US Consul General in Stockholm (1933-1934), Shanghai (1935–36), Singapore (1936–37) and Buenos Aires (1938-41). The Consulate General of the United States in Shanghai is one of the six American diplomatic and consular posts in the People's Republic of China. First established in 1844 following the signing of the Treaty of Wanghia, the U.S. Consulate General in Shanghai had a presence until the conclusion of the Chinese Communist Revolution and it closed in 1950. It reopened in 1980 at its present location at 1469 Huai Hai Zhong Road (at the corner with Urumqi Road) in an early 20th-century mansion. The Consulate General has two other offices in Shanghai. James Grover McDonald
James Grover McDonald (November 29, 1886 – September 25, 1964) was a United States diplomat. He served as the first U.S. Ambassador to Israel. Early life McDonald was born in Coldwater, Ohio, on November 29, 1886. His parents operated a hotel, and later relocated to Albany, Indiana, to operate a second one. McDonald received his bachelor's degree from Indiana University Bloomington (IU) in 1909, and completed a master's degree in History, Political Science and International Relations at IU in 1910. He was selected for a teaching fellowship in history at Harvard University, and remained there until his returning to Indiana University as an assistant professor in 1914. Until 1948 the area that is now the state of Israel had been under British administration as part of the League of Nations/United Nations Mandatory Palestine, British Mandate for Palestine. Josiah ( or ) or Yoshiyahu; la, Iosias was the 16th king of Judah (–609 BCE) who, according to the Hebrew Bible, instituted major religious reforms by removing official worship of gods other than Yahweh. Josiah is credited by most biblical scholars with having established or compiled important Hebrew scriptures during the "Deuteronomic reform" which probably occurred during his rule. Arlington National Cemetery
Arlington National Cemetery is one of two national cemeteries run by the United States Army. Nearly 400,000 people are buried in its 639 acres (259 ha) in Arlington, Virginia. There are about 30 funerals conducted on weekdays and 7 held on Saturday. The other Army cemetery is in Washington, D.C. and is called the U.S. Soldiers' and Airmen's Home National Cemetery. All other national cemeteries are run by the National Cemetery System of the Department of Veterans Affairs.
