Monmouth County Historical Association
The Monmouth County Historical Association was established in 1898 by a group of county residents headed by professional educator Caroline Gallup Reed. They soon incorporated in order “to discover, procure, preserve and perpetuate whatever relates to the history of Monmouth County.” In 1931, the present Museum and Library, a brick Georgian-style building designed by architect J. Hallam Conover, was constructed in Freehold, the county seat of Monmouth County, New Jersey. The enthusiasm generated by the announcement of a new headquarters brought in numerous contributions of furniture, artifacts, paintings, rare documents and books. Historic properties In 1936, the MCHA expanded its mission to include the preservation of historic properties. In that year, the first of five historic properties came to the MCHA when Mrs. J. Caroline Gallup Reed
Caroline Gallup Reed (also known as Mrs. Sylvanus Reed; 5 August 1821 in Berne, New York – 17 November 1914 in New York City) was a United States educator. Biography She was the daughter of Albert Gallup, treasurer of Albany County, New York, and was educated at St. Peter's School and the female academy in Albany. In 1851 she married Sylvanus Reed, and in 1864 established a school for young women in New York City. In 1883, the school was incorporated under the laws of New York State as Reed College, so as to assure the perpetuity of the establishment. Reed was elected a member of the American Geographical Society in 1860, of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, and of the New York Genealogical and Biographical Society in 1882. She published various papers, and, before retiring, regularly issued "circulars of information" upon subjects of general educational interest. Freehold Public Library
The Freehold Public Library the free public library of Borough of Freehold, New Jersey located at 28½ East Main Street. Serving a population of 11,797 residents and with a collection of approximately 26,000 volumes the library has a yearly circulation of circa 28,000 items. This municipal library is not a member of the Monmouth County Library system. The building is one of the remaining Carnegie-funded libraries in the state and is believed to be the only one with the name Carnegie Library engraved on its facade.
