Monkstown railway station (also known as Monkstown Halt) served the village of Monkstown in County Antrim, Northern Ireland. History The station was opened by the Belfast and Northern Counties Railway The Northern Counties Committee (NCC) was a railway that served the north-east of Ireland. It was built to Irish gauge () but later acquired a number of narrow gauge lines. It had its origins in the Belfast and Ballymena Railway that opened to ... on 1 July 1905. It closed along with the rest of the - line in 1978, but re-opened again for a short period in 1980 when -Antrim stopping services were resumed. The station closed to passengers on 21 February 1981 when the line was once again mothballed. The line has since re-opened in 2001, however Monkstown station has remained closed. Monkstown, County Antrim
Monkstown is a townland (of 811 acres) and electoral ward in County Antrim, Northern Ireland. It is within the urban area of Newtownabbey and the Antrim and Newtownabbey Borough Council area. The townland was previously called Ballynamanagh () It is also situated in the civil parish of Carnmoney and the historic barony of Belfast Lower. Monkstown is said to be the burial place of Fergus Mor Mac Eirc, king of Dal Riata. which suggests a religious house was established in the 5th century CE. It possibly became a grange- a farm that was managed by a monastery, and was possibly associated with the monastery at Woodburn in Carrickfergus. The Ulster Transport Authority (UTA) ran rail and bus transport in Northern Ireland from 1948 until 1966. Whiteabbey Railway Station serves the village of Whiteabbey in Newtownabbey, Northern Ireland. History The station was opened by the Belfast and Ballymena Railway on 11 April 1848.
