Monkey Junction is an unincorporated area near Wilmington, North Carolina, Wilmington in New Hanover County, North Carolina, New Hanover County at the intersection of College Road (North Carolina Highway 132, NC 132) and Carolina Beach Road (U.S. Route 421 in North Carolina, US 421). It is one of several centers of recent commercial and residential growth near Wilmington. In 2008, Wilmington began controversial efforts to annex the community, but in 2012, the annexation requests were overturned by the North Carolina General Assembly. History The intersection has been known as "Monkey Junction" for almost seventy years, due to a gas station that was located there from the late 1930s through the mid-1970s. North Carolina Highway 132 (NC 132) is a north-south North Carolina State Highway entirely in New Hanover County. The highway follows College Road for the duration of its route. The southern terminus of NC 132 begins at U.S. Route 421 (US 421) in the census-designated place of Myrtle Grove south of Wilmington. Fort Fisher
Fort Fisher was a Confederate fort during the American Civil War. It protected the vital trading routes of the port at Wilmington, North Carolina, from 1861 until its capture by the Union in 1865. The fort was located on one of Cape Fear River's two outlets to the Atlantic Ocean on what was then known as Federal Point or Confederate Point and today is known as Pleasure Island.
