Monika Helfer (born 18 October 1947, in Au) is an Austrian writer. She was invested with the Austrian Decoration for Science and Art in 2016. She was the recipient of the Solothurner Literaturpreis in 2020, and the Schubart-Literaturpreis in 2021. Au, Vorarlberg
Au is a town in the Bregenz Forest in Vorarlberg (Austria). Geography The town belongs to the Bregenz Forest, is part of the district of Bregenz, and lies in the '' Upper Bregenz Forst.'' 40 percent of its 45 km² area is covered with forest, 34.4% of the area is used as alpine pasture (''Almwirtschaft'') and for other forms of alpine agriculture. The town itself is unlike most others in the area, as it has no real center. Au is an example of a "scattered village" (German: ''Streudorf''). It consists of several districts: Am Stein, Argenau, Argenstein, Argenzipfel, Jaghausen, Kreuzgasse, Lebernau, Lugen, Lisse, Rehmen, Schrecken, and Wieden. The town hall is located in Argenau, but the parish church is located in Jaghausen. The district of Rehmen also has its own church. The Austrian Decoration for Science and Art (german: Österreichisches Ehrenzeichen für Wissenschaft und Kunst) is a state decoration of the Republic of Austria and forms part of the Austrian national honours system. History The "Austrian Decoration for Science and Art" was established by the National Council as an honour for scientific or artistic achievements by Federal Law of May 1955 ( Federal Law Gazette No. 96/1955 as amended BGBl I No 128/2001). At the same time, the National Council also established the "Austrian Cross of Honour for Science and Art", which is awarded as "Cross of Honour, First Class" (German: ''Ehrenkreuz 1. Schubart-Literaturpreis
The Schubart-Literaturpreis is a Germany literary prize donated by the city of Aalen since 1956 in honor of the 18th-century poet Christian Friedrich Daniel Schubart. It is one of the oldest literary awards of Baden-Württemberg. The main prize, which is 15,000 euros as of 2015 (: €20,000), is presented every two years on Schubart's birthday to German-language writers whose literary or journalistic achievement "is in the tradition of the liberal and enlightened thought of Daniel Schubart." German Book Prize
The German Book Prize (''Deutscher Buchpreis'') is awarded annually, in October, by the German Publishers and Booksellers Association (''Börsenverein des Deutschen Buchhandels'') to the best new German language novel of the year. The books, published in Germany, Austria and Switzerland, are nominated by their publishers, who can propose up to two books from their current or planned publication list. The books should be in shops before the short-list is announced in September of the award year. The winner is awarded €25,000, while the five shortlisted authors receive €2,500 each. It is presented annually during the Frankfurt Book Fair. The prize was created in 2005, as a successor to the Deutscher Bücherpreis, to heighten awareness for authors writing in German.
