Moncrief Springs, originally known as Moncrief's springs or Moncrief Spring, is a Spring (hydrology), natural spring near Jacksonville, Florida in Duval County, Florida. Mythology about its history, a park, and resort area developed around it. Legend According to legend, it is named for Eugene Moncrief, a pawnbroker who immigrated to Florida and settled in the area. An 1876 report touted a visit to the springs and its reported health benefits. Park Plans to establish a pleasure park at the springs connected by electric tram to the city were announced in 1903. An ice cream company named for the springs incorporated in 1921. Moncrief Spring Park is named for the spring. A five-mile race between a Cadillac and one of the first biplanes to visit the area was held. During Peter Jones' tenure as mayor of Jacksonville a hotel and resort was developed by the spring. Spring (hydrology)
A spring is a point of exit at which groundwater from an aquifer flows out on top of Earth's crust (pedosphere) and becomes surface water. It is a component of the hydrosphere. Springs have long been important for humans as a source of fresh water, especially in arid regions which have relatively little annual rainfall. Springs are driven out onto the surface by various natural forces, such as gravity and hydrostatic pressure. Their yield varies widely from a volumetric flow rate of nearly zero to more than for the biggest springs. Formation Springs are formed when groundwater flows onto the surface. This typically happens when the groundwater table reaches above the surface level. Springs may also be formed as a result of karst topography, aquifers, or volcanic activity.
