Bitola (; mk, Битола ) is a city in the southwestern part of North Macedonia. It is located in the southern part of the Pelagonia valley, surrounded by the Baba (North Macedonia), Baba, Nidže, and Kajmakčalan mountain ranges, north of the Medžitlija-Níki border crossing with Greece. The city stands at an important junction connecting the south of the Adriatic Sea region with the Aegean Sea and Central Europe, and it is an administrative, cultural, industrial, commercial, and educational centre. It has been known since the Ottoman Empire, Ottoman period as the "City of Consuls", since many European countries had consulates in Bitola. Bitola, known during the Ottoman Empire as Manastır or Monastir, is one of the oldest cities in North Macedonia. It was founded as Heraclea Lyncestis in the middle of the 4th century BC by Philip II of Macedon. This is a list of cities and towns in North Macedonia. There are 34 cities and towns in North Macedonia. In Macedonian language, Macedonian, every city or town, regardless of size, is called ''grad'' (''град'', Plural, pl. ''gradovi'', ''градови''), but a smaller one can also be called ''gratče'' (''гратче'', pl. ''гратчиња'', ''gratčinja''), a diminutive of ''grad''. Only five cities in the country have a population of more than 50,000 inhabitants. The capital, Skopje, is home to about 25% of the country's total population. The 2002 census showed that the majority of the population, 59.5%, lived in urban areas.
