Mohawk, Herkimer County, New York
Mohawk is a village in Herkimer County, New York, United States. The population was 2,731 at the 2010 census. The village was named after the adjacent Mohawk River. The village is at the northern border of the town of German Flatts and adjacent to the Erie Canal. Mohawk is southeast of Utica. History The area was settled by Palatine Germans after 1722. In 1725, the King of Great Britain and Governor Burnet granted Mohawk to the Palatine Germans in what was known as the Burnetsfield Patent. George Washington was known to stop in Mohawk to have lunch at the Shoemaker Tavern on his way to and from Fort Stanwix in Rome. Mohawk became known as "Bennetts Corners" after a hotel stand that was located here in 1826. In 1838, the village became known as "Mohawk". The village was incorporated on April 16, 1844. Palatines (german: Pfälzer), also known as the Palatine Dutch, are the people and princes of Palatinates ( Holy Roman principalities) of the Holy Roman Empire. Starkville, New York
Starkville is hamlet located west of Fort Plain on NY 80, in the eastern part of the town of Stark in southern Herkimer County, New York, United States. Established in the late 18th century, at one time the hamlet had a post office, three churches (Lutheran, Methodist, and Baptist), two hotels, a store, several mills, a cheese factory, a number of shops and about 40 homes. In 2014, many of these structures are gone, but several remain, including an old carriage house factory and two churches on Rt. 80, one of which is in private ownership as an art studio. New York State Route 168
New York State Route 168 (NY 168) is an east–west state highway in southern Herkimer County, New York, in the United States. The highway runs for through a largely rural area of Upstate New York, from an intersection with NY 28 in the village of Mohawk to a junction with NY 80 in Stark. Along the way, it intersects one state highway and crosses multiple creeks. The route was originally designated as part of Route 5, an unsigned legislative route, in 1908 and as part of the signed NY 28 in 1924. In the 1930 renumbering of state highways in New York, NY 28 was realigned to follow a new alignment to the west while its former routing between Mohawk and Paines Hollow became NY 168. Richfield Springs is a village located in the Town of Richfield, on the north-central border of Otsego County, New York, United States. The population was 1,264 at the 2010 census. New York State Route 28 (NY 28) is a state highway extending for in the shape of a "C" between the Hudson Valley city of Kingston and southern Warren County in the U.S. state of New York. Along the way, it intersects several major routes, including Interstate 88 (I-88), U.S. Route 20 (US 20), and the New York State Thruway twice. Fort Plain is a village in Montgomery County, New York, United States. As of the 2010 census, the village population was 2,322. The village is named after a fort built during the American Revolution at the junction of the Mohawk River and its tributary Otsquago Creek. New York State Route 5S (NY 5S) is a east–west state highway located in the Mohawk Valley of New York in the United States. It extends from a continuation of NY 5A at an interchange with NY 5, NY 8, NY 12, and Interstate 790 (I-790) in Utica to an interchange with NY 890 in Rotterdam. Ilion is a village in Herkimer County, New York, United States. The population was 7,790 at the 2017 census. The village is at the northern edge of the town of German Flatts, though a tiny portion is in the town of Frankfort. It is south of the Mohawk River and Erie Canal. History "Ilion" is a name for the ancient city of Troy. The area where Ilion is located was first settled by Palatine Germans under the Burnetsfield Patent around 1725. Settlers first took plots along Steele Creek, which flows into the Mohawk River. Gradually they built many mills along the creek. Herkimer County Shootings
The Herkimer County shootings were a shooting spree that took place on March 13, 2013, in Herkimer County, New York. Incident Kurt Myers, a 64-year-old resident of the village of Mohawk, set fire to his apartment before 9:30am and proceeded to a barber shop in Mohawk. Myers briefly spoke to the barbershop owner John Seymour before opening fire, killing two customers and injuring Seymour and another customer. He proceeded to a car wash in the nearby village of Herkimer, where he killed an employee and a customer. Myers was pursued by police and eventually cornered in an abandoned bar in Herkimer. The standoff lasted overnight. Police entered the building around 8am the next day. Myers shot and killed a police dog named "Ape" and the police returned fire, killing him. Aftermath No motive for the shootings is known. At the time of the shooting, Myers had no savings, no job, and was maxed out on all his credit cards.
