Moffat F.C. was an association football club from Moffat in Dumfriesshire. History The club was founded in 1880 and entered the Scottish Cup for the first time in 1881–82, losing to the 5th Kirkcudbrightshire Rifle Volunteers F.C. in a first round replay. The club had strong links with local churches; the club presidents included the Rev. A. R. McEwen of the United Presbyterian Church and office-holders included the Rev. W. H. Churchill of Reigate and Rev. G. S. Ponsonby of Cambridge as honorary vice-presidents, the Rev. W. Pulsford as a representative of the club at the local association, and the Rev J. W. Randall as vice-captain of the side. The Rev. Churchill was from Moffat and after his move to England he donated a trophy, the Churchill Cup, which became the premier prize for clubs in Dumfriesshire. James Fraser was a Scottish international footballer. James Fraser was one of two internationalists from Moffat in Dumfries and Galloway, the other being James B Niven. Fraser was a prominent forward in south of Scotland football but little is known about his life or playing career. He gained his one Scottish international cap while playing for Moffat F.C. Jimmy Niven
James Bryden Niven (10 February 1861 – 1933) was a Scottish international association football, footballer. Niven was born in the parish of Kirkpatrick-Juxta near Moffat, Dumfriesshire, the son of James Bryden Niven, Sr. and Elizabeth Saunders. Niven was one of two Scottish internationalists from Moffat. The other was James Fraser (footballer), James Fraser. While playing for Moffat F.C., Niven was an awarded a full Scotland national football team, Scotland international cap, for having played in the 8–2 defeat of Ireland national football team (1882–1950), Ireland on 14 March 1885. The game was played at the second Hampden Park, later known as Cathkin Park, and Alex Higgins (footballer, born 1863), Alex Higgins of Kilmarnock F.C., Kilmarnock scored a hat-trick.
