Moerbeke () is a Municipalities of Belgium, municipality in the Belgium, Belgian province of East Flanders. It is sometimes unofficially called Moerbeke-Waas () to distinguish between this place and in Geraardsbergen. The municipality comprises the town of Moerbeke proper, and part of the Dutch-Belgian village Koewacht. In 2021, Moerbeke had a total population of 6,619. The total area is 37.80 km². Moerbeke was known very well for its sugar refinery. It is thought to have been the hometown of William of Moerbeke, who as Bishop of Corinth produced a new translation into Latin of the works of Aristotle, including certain which had been rediscovered from Arab sources, in the late 13th century. Unique is the political situation: since 1847 the Flemish Liberals and Democrats, liberal party has an absolute majority. The current mayor is Robby De Caluwé. The previous mayor was Filip Marin. Waasland
The Waasland is a Belgian region. It is part of the Belgian provinces of East Flanders and Antwerp. The other borders of the Land van Waas are with the Scheldt and Durme rivers. The (informal) capital and major city of the region is Sint-Niklaas. It is also called the ''Land van Waas'' (Land of Waas); Waas most likely refers to the soggy soil of the region although the exact etymology is unknown. One possibility is a connection to the English word "wasteland". The swamps that characterized it have long been drained although many fields are still noticeably convex; the result of many years of plowing the topsoil towards the center to improve drainage. Wachtebeke () is a municipality located in the Belgian province of East Flanders. The municipality comprises the town of Wachtebeke proper, and a smaller town: Overslag. In 2021, Wachtebeke had a total population of 7.769. The total area is 34.53 km2. The current mayor of Wachtebeke (as of 2012) is Rudy van Cronenburg. Stekene
Stekene () is a municipality located in the Belgian province of East Flanders. Since 1976, the municipality has comprised the towns of Kemzeke, Klein-Sinaai and Stekene proper. It also includes the village Koewacht. In 2021, Stekene had a total population of 18,863. The total area is 44.80 km². Robby De Caluwé
Robby De Caluwé (1 January 1975) is a Belgian politician for Open Vld. He is mayor of Moerbeke-Waas since 2013 and member of the Belgian Federal Parliament since 2019. Biography De Caluwé studied management between 1994 and 1997. He worked as a Branch Manager at SD Worx until 2011. In 2011 he started his own Human Resources company. Political career In 1994, De Caluwé started his political career in Young VLD Moerbeke. Very soon, he became secretary, and later chairman. During a short period, he was also a member of the national party council from Open Vld. In 2010 he became chairman of Open Vld Moerbeke. He started in local politics in Moerbeke and became member of the council after the elections in 2000.
