Helena Modrzejewska
Helena Modrzejewska (; born Jadwiga Benda; 12 October 1840 – 8 April 1909), known professionally as Helena Modjeska, was a Polish actress who specialized in Shakespearean and tragic roles. She was successful first on the Polish stage. After emigrating to the United States (and despite her poor command of English), she also succeeded on stage in America and London. She is regarded as the greatest actress in the history of theatre in Poland. Early life Helena Modjeska was born in Kraków, Poland, on 12 October 1840. Her birth name was recorded as Jadwiga Benda, but she was later baptized Helena Opid, under her godfather's surname. Modjeska's parentage is unclear. Her mother was Józefa (Misel) Benda, the widow of a prosperous Kraków merchant, Szymon Benda. In her autobiography, Modjeska claimed that her father was a musician named Michael Opid. Joseph Mélèze-Modrzejewski
Joseph Mélèze-Modrzejewski (Józef Edmund Mélèze-Modrzejewski, 8 March 1930 in Lublin – 29 January 2017) was a Polish-French historian and professor of ancient history at the Pantheon-Sorbonne University. Career Joseph Mélèze-Modrzejewski began his scientific career in Poland as a student of Rafał Taubenschlag. After his arrival in France in 1958,he taught for thirty years the legal and social history of the Hellenistic world at the Faculty of Law of Paris and at the Sorbonne. Then following his retirement from the University in 1999, Mélèze-Modrzejewski continued for 5 years to lead a seminar on papyrology and history of rights from ancient times at the École pratique des hautes études (IVe Section, historical and philological sciences) established in 1972. Rudolf Modrzejewski
Ralph Modjeski (born Rudolf Modrzejewski; January 27, 1861 – June 26, 1940) was a Polish-American civil engineer who achieved prominence as "America's greatest bridge builder." Life He was born in Bochnia, called Galicia at the time, on January 27, 1861, to Gustav Sinnmayer Modrzejewski and actress Helena Opid Modrzejewska (best known outside Poland as Helena Modjeska). In 1865, his mother left Sinnmayer, and in 1868, she married "Count" Karol Bożenta Chłapowski. In July 1876, they emigrated to America, where, as a matter of convenience, the boy's mother changed her name to Helena Modjeska and her son's name to Ralph Modjeski. He was a classmate of Ignacy Jan Paderewski in Poland and was a formidable pianist in his own right.
