Modiolus Barbatus
''Modiolus barbatus'', the bearded horse mussel, is a species of "horse mussel", a marine (ocean), marine bivalve mollusc in the family (biology), family Mytilidae, the mussels. The fossil record of this species dates back to the Pliocene (age range: 3.6 to 2.588 million years ago). Description The shell of an adult ''Modiolus barbatus'' can be as long as .A. Lok, S. Acarli, S. Serdar, A. Kose and P. Goulletque GROWTH AND SURVIVAL RATES OF BEARDED HORSE MUSSEL (MODIOLUS BARBATUS LINNE, 1758) IN MERSIN BAY (TURKEY)/ref> The shape is elongated and ovoid or rhomboidal with a curved or obtuse dorsal margin. The outer surface of the shell is dark brown, while the inside of the valves is blue or slightly iridescent gray. These mussles are characterized by a ''periostracum'' with long, stiff, flat bristles. They are attached with strong ''byssus'' to the underground. Leo George Hertlein
Leo George Hertlein (1898 – 1972) was an American paleontologist and malacologist who studied the Recent and fossil mollusks of the eastern Pacific Ocean. Biography Hertlein was born on a farm in Pratt County, Kansas. After graduating high school in Wichita, Kansas, he moved to the West Coast and entered the University of Oregon as a geology major. After graduating with a B.A., Hertlein enrolled as a graduate student at Stanford University. He received his doctorate in 1929. His dissertation was on the Pliocene fossils of the San Diego, California area. In 1929, Hertlein was appointed assistant curator of the Department of Paleontology at the California Academy of Sciences. He rose to become the curator of Invertebrate Paleontology and elected a Fellow. In the 1930s, he traveled to the Galapagos Islands and the nearshore areas of Central America and Mexico. He published over 150 papers on Recent and fossil mollusks, echinoderms, and brachiopods from California, Oregon ...

George Brettingham Sowerby III
George Brettingham Sowerby III (16 September 1843 – 31 January 1921) was a British conchologist, publisher, and illustrator. He, too, worked (like his father George Brettingham Sowerby II and his grandfather George Brettingham Sowerby I) on the ''Thesaurus Conchyliorium'', a comprehensive, beautifully illustrated work on molluscs. He was colour blind, and thus his daughter did most of the colouring of his engravings. External links Petit, R. E. (2009). Timothy Abbott Conrad
Timothy Abbott Conrad (June 21, 1803 in Trenton, New Jersey – August 9, 1877 in Trenton) was an American geologist and malacologist. Biography He was from early life an investigator of American paleontology and natural history, devoting himself to the study of the shells of the Tertiary and Cretaceous formations, and to existing species of mollusks. In 1831 he began the issue of a work on “American Marine Conchology,” and the year following published the first number of his “Fossil Shells of the Tertiary Formation,” which was never completed. A “Monography of the Family Unionidae” was issued between 1835 and 1847. The lithographed plates in his publications were in part his own work. He contributed many articles to the '' American Journal of Science'' and the ''Journal of the Philadelphia Academy of Science''. As one of the New York state geologists he prepared the geological report for 1837. He was paleontologist of the New York Geological Survey from 1838 until ...
