Modesto
Modesto () is the county seat and largest city of Stanislaus County, California, United States. With a population of 218,464 at the 2020 census, it is the 19th largest city in the state of California and forms part of the Sacramento-Stockton-Modesto Combined Statistical Area. Modesto is located in the Central Valley, south of Sacramento and north of Fresno. Distances from other places include: north of Merced, California, east of San Francisco, west of Yosemite National Park, and south of Stockton. The city is surrounded by rich farmland. Stanislaus County ranks sixth among California counties in farm production. It is home to Gallo Family Winery, the largest family-owned winery in the United States. Led by milk, almonds, chickens, walnuts, and corn silage, the county grossed nearly $3.1 billion in agricultural production in 2011. Modesto Transportation Center
The Modesto Transportation Center is a bus terminal and former train station located in downtown Modesto, California. History The Central Pacific Railroad was built through Modesto in 1870, and was taken over by the Southern Pacific in 1884. In 1915, the Southern Pacific Railroad built a new Mission Revival-style station. It was used until 1971, when Amtrak took over intercity passenger service. When Amtak restored service to Modesto with the '' San Joaquin'' in 1974, the former Santa Fe station in Riverbank was used instead. (It was replaced with the modern Modesto station in 1999.) The depot was restored in 1993 as a bus terminal. Rail service is expected to be restored by 2024 as part of the Altamont Corridor Express extension to Ceres. The station building is undergoing renovations to expand the passenger waiting area at a cost of $5.23 million. Gallo Center For The Arts
The Gallo Center for the Arts is a performing arts center in Modesto, California. The building was formally opened on September 27, 2007 and features two theaters: the Mary Stuart Rogers Theater and the Foster Family Theater. The Gallo Center hosts six resident companies: Central West Ballet, the Modesto Community Concerts Association, the Modesto Symphony Orchestra, Modesto Performing Arts, Opera Modesto, and YES (Youth Entertainment Stage) Company. The Center has been toured and visited by many stars and notable figures since its opening day, with Patti LuPone becoming the first star to perform in the Mary Stuart Rogers Theater. San Joaquin Valley
The San Joaquin Valley ( ; es, Valle de San Joaquín) is the area of the Central Valley of the U.S. state of California that lies south of the Sacramento–San Joaquin River Delta and is drained by the San Joaquin River. Modesto Arch
The Modesto Arch is a centennial slogan arch, built in 1912, to welcome automobile drivers to Modesto, California where it currently stands at the intersection of 9th and I Streets. The arch bears the city's motto, "Water, Wealth, Contentment, Health", illuminated by 696 incandescent lightbulbs. The original first-place slogan was "Nobody's Got Modesto's Goat", which was later rejected, and the second-place slogan was used instead. William "Billy" Chapman Ralston (January 12, 1826 – August 27, 1875) was a San Francisco businessman and financier, and the founder of the Bank of California.
