Modern Theatres
Modern Theaters Ltd was an Indian film studio in Salem, Tamil Nadu started by T. R. Sundaram Mudaliar in 1935. The studio produced over more than 150 films until 1982 in Tamil, Telugu, Kannada, Malayalam, Hindi, Sinhalese and even English of which Tamil were the majority. History In the early 1930s, T. R. Sundaram entered the world of Tamil cinema as a partner of a Salem-based film company, Angel Films. He was involved in productions such as ''Draupadi Vastrapaharanam'' (1934), Dhruva (1935) and Nalla Thangal (1935). Then he decided to start his own company, Modern Theatres Limited. He realized that to make film making a business, it had to be organized and managed like a business enterprise. He also planned a schedule of producing films on a tight budget (two or three a year), so that the market and consumers were regularly and continually supplied with his products. It is notable for being the first sound film in the Malayalam language, and the third feature film in Malayalam cinema after ''Vigathakumaran'' and ''Marthanda Varma.'' Based on the short story ''Vidhiyum Mrs. Nayarum'' by A. Sundaram. The film is a melodrama about the struggle of two orphaned children. The film stars K. K. Aroor in the title role and M. K. ''Ponmudi'' is a 1950 Tamil-language film directed by Ellis R. Dungan. It was based on the Tamil poet Bharathidasan's verse novel ''Ethirparatha Mutham''. Plot ''Ponmudi'' was a love story based on the Bharathidasan novel ''Edhirparatha Mutham''. Production Producer T. R. Sundaram of Modern Theatres wanted to make a film based on ''Edhirparatha Mutham'' (lit. Unexpected Kiss) – a novel written by the Tamil rationalist poet Bharatidasan. Ellis Dungan was hired to direct Bharathidasan's script. The film was made at the Modern Theatres studio in Salem. Some scenes were also filmed in Yercaud. Manorama (Tamil Actress)
Gopishantha (26 May 1937 – 10 October 2015), better known by her stage name Manorama, also called Aachi, was an Indian actress, playback singer and comedian who had appeared in more than 1000 films and 5000 stage performances and several television series predomninantely in the Tamil language until 2015. She was a recipient of the Kalaimamani award. In 2002, Government of India awarded Manorama the Padma Shri for her contribution to the arts. She received the National Film Award for Best Supporting Actress for her performance in the film ''Pudhiya Padhai'' (1989) and Filmfare Lifetime Achievement Award – South (1995). ''Kandam Becha Kottu'' () is a 1961 Indian Malayalam-language drama film directed and produced by T. R. Sundaram under the banner of Modern Theatres. Gevacolor is a color motion picture process. It was introduced in 1947 by Gevaert in Belgium, and an affiliate of Agfacolor. Utthama Puthiran is the 1940 Tamil language film directed by T. R. Sundaram. P. U. Chinnappa, M. V. Rajamma, T. S. Balaiah played the lead roles. It was the first Tamil film in which the leading actor P. U. Chinnappa played a double role. Production ''Uthama Puthiran'' was adapted from the 1939 Hollywood film '' The Man in the Iron Mask'', which was based on the 1847–1850 novel '' The Vicomte of Bragelonne: Ten Years Later'' by the French adventure fiction maestro, Alexandre Dumas. Jaishankar
Jaishankar (12 July 1938 – 3 June 2000) was an Indian actor known for his work in Tamil cinema. He was a very popular lead actor in the 1960s and 70s. He was credited onscreen with title of ''Makkal Kalaingnar'' (people's artiste) or ''Makkal Thamizhan'' (people's Tamil) in most films starring him. He was also referred to as ''Thennakathu James Bond'' (South Indian James Bond) because of his roles in films such as ''Vallavan Oruvan'' and ''CID Shankar''.
