Model Animation
Model animation is a form of stop motion animation designed to merge with live-action footage to create the illusion of a real-world fantasy sequence. Techniques Many types of models have been created and developed, and the choice mainly depends on the budget of the film: Clay Models: Unlike most clay figures used for animation, clay models have an inner metal skeleton designed to allow them realistic movements and expressions. Built-Up Models: These types of models are more expensive and detailed than clay models. They are made by building up pieces of foam on a metal skeleton to create a body, and then either brushing on several layers of liquid latex or casting soft rubbery skins and attaching then to the padded armature. "Cast" Models: These types of models are the most expensive used in the industry and are longer-lasting than the other types. Stop Motion
Stop motion is an animated filmmaking technique in which objects are physically manipulated in small increments between individually photographed frames so that they will appear to exhibit independent motion or change when the series of frames is played back. Any kind of object can thus be animated, but puppets with movable joints (puppet animation) or plasticine figures (''clay animation'' or claymation) are most commonly used. Puppets, models or clay figures built around an armature are used in model animation. Stop motion with live actors is often referred to as pixilation. Stop motion of flat materials such as paper, fabrics or photographs is usually called cutout animation. Go Motion
Go motion is a variation of stop motion animation which incorporates motion blur into each frame involving motion. It was co-developed by Industrial Light & Magic and Phil Tippett. Stop motion animation can create a disorienting, and distinctive staccato effect, because the animated object is perfectly sharp in every frame, since each frame of the animation was actually shot when the object was perfectly still. Real moving objects in similar scenes of the same movie will have motion blur, because they moved while the shutter of the camera was open. Filmmakers use a variety of techniques to simulate motion blur, such as moving the model slightly during the exposure of each film frame or using a glass plate smeared with petroleum jelly in front of the camera lens to blur the moving areas. Phil Tippett
Phil Tippett (born September 27, 1951) is an American movie director and Oscar and Emmy Award-winning visual effects supervisor and producer, who specializes in creature design, stop-motion and computerized character animation. Over his career, he has assisted ILM and DreamWorks, and in 1984 formed his own company, Tippett Studio. His work has appeared in movies such as the original ''Star Wars'' trilogy, ''Jurassic Park'', and ''RoboCop''. In 2021, he released his long-gestating stop-motion film ''Mad God'', which was funded through Kickstarter and distributed by Shudder. Early life Tippett was born in Berkeley, California. When he was seven, Tippett saw Ray Harryhausen's special effects classic, ''The 7th Voyage of Sinbad'', and his life's direction was set. James Danforth (born July 13, 1940) is an American stop-motion animator, known for model-animation, matte painting, and for his work on ''When Dinosaurs Ruled the Earth'' (1970), a theme-sequel to Ray Harryhausen's ''One Million Years B.C.'' (1967). He later went on to work with Ray Harryhausen on the film '' Clash of the Titans'' (1981) to mainly do the animation of the winged horse Pegasus. Danforth has been nominated two times for an Academy Award for Visual Effects for George Pal's ''7 Faces of Dr. Lao'' (1964), and for ''When Dinosaurs Ruled the Earth'' (1970).
