Emperor (band)
Emperor is a Norwegian black metal band formed in 1991, regarded as highly influential by critics and emerging black metal bands. The group split up in 2001, but reunited from 2005 to 2007 for a few festival dates and brief US tours, and again reunited in 2013 to 2014. Emperor reformed for the third time in 2016. The group was founded by Ihsahn (guitar/vocal) and Samoth (then, drums). History Early career and ''In the Nightside Eclipse'' (1991–1995) In their youth, Ihsahn and Samoth met at a rock music seminar. Soon, however, Samoth began to write music outside of Thou Shalt Suffer, and together with Ihsahn and a new bass player called Mortiis (later of his own eponymous band Mortiis), Emperor was formed. After a short while together, the band released a demo entitled ''Wrath of the Tyrant''. It qu ...

The Adversary (Ihsahn Album)
''The Adversary'' is the debut solo album by Emperor frontman Ihsahn. Released on 10 April 2006, it is the first in a conceptual trilogy of albums including ''angL'' and ''After''. It features a guest vocal appearance by Ulver's Garm. The album has been noted for its stylistic diversity, encompassing extreme metal as well as progressive and classic metal influences. Background The album combines various extreme metal genres with progressive and classic metal in the vein of Judas Priest. Ihsahn described ''The Adversary'' as "all over the place, with me trying out other subgenres in metal that I didn’t really have a go at before." He further explained of the album's diversity that it had its origins in a certain nostalgia: Ihsahn described his intention with the production as realizing "a more sparse sound picture, inspired by more '70s metal. I also mixed that album in an analog studio with equipment from the '50s, '60s and '70s and didn't overdub any guitars." Several s ...

Eremita
''Eremita'' is the fourth studio solo album by former Emperor frontman Ihsahn. The album features guest appearances by several notable musicians, including Devin Townsend and Jeff Loomis of Nevermore. Background The album is Ihsahn's first solo outing since the conclusion of the conceptual trilogy encompassing his first three albums, '' The Adversary'', ''angL'', and ''After''. Ihsahn said that ''Eremita'' was the product of an intentional contrast with ''After''. He described ''After'' as "a very desolate, bleak landscape. There were no signs of life in any of the lyrics," while, for ''Eremita'', the atmosphere is "much more introverted, much more paranoid and kind of schizophrenic. I tend to bring up many of the same themes, but lyrically it comes from a different perspective." The album's sense of introversion, paranoia, and schizophrenia is represented in the album cover, with which Ihsahn's ongoing interest in Nietzsche turned to Nietzsche's mad final years. Nietzsche is ...

Das Seelenbrechen
''Das Seelenbrechen'' is the fifth studio solo album by Emperor frontman Ihsahn. Released on 21 October 2013, the album was described by Ihsahn as a "deliberate sidestep" that used improvisation as the basis for his most diverse recording to date, which ''Decibel Magazine'' described as "surprising and strangely satisfying". Background Ihsahn described ''Das Seelenbrechen'' as a "deliberate sidestep" from his previous solo albums, which was designed "to avoid falling into any kind of formula". He suggested that the album was influenced by the musical experimentation of Diamanda Galas and Scott Walker, for whom he admitted "I've always admired musicians that dive into it like that and express something right there and then without filter, or polishing it too much". Describing the album as intentionally "out of his comfort zone", it relied upon improvisation to create a "more spontaneous and intuitive" feeling. The result of this spontaneity was that he felt that he could expre ...
