Mittageisen
"Mittageisen" is a song by English rock band Siouxsie and the Banshees. It originally appeared on the band's 1978 debut album ''The Scream'' as "Metal Postcard (Mittageisen)"; the track was re-recorded in 1979, this time with the lyrics sung in German, and released as a single in West Germany with " Love in a Void" on the b-side. That September the song was given a UK release by record label Polydor as a double A-side single. Content and sleeve The title "Mittageisen" is a word play based on the German words "''Mittagessen''" (literally: "noon meal", i.e. lunch) and ''Eisen'' ("iron"). The title was inspired by antinazi German artist John Heartfield's photocollage ''Hurrah, die Butter ist Alle!'' ("Hurray, the Butter is Finished!"), which was also used as the single's cover art. Heartfield's photocollage was initially used on the front page of the German magazine ''Arbeiter-Illustrierte-Zeitung'' (''Workers Illustrated Journal''), published on 19 December 1935. The artist was ...

The Scream (album)
''The Scream'' is the debut studio album by British rock band Siouxsie and the Banshees, released on 13 November 1978 by Polydor Records. The album is considered a landmark recording: its innovative combination of angular guitar with a bass-led rhythm and machine-like drums played mostly on toms, made it a pioneering work of the post-punk genre. ''The Scream'' was met with widespread acclaim and was hailed by critics as an original musical development in rock music. It has been cited as a key influence on a number of succeeding post-punk, noise rock and alternative rock acts, including Joy Division, Killing Joke, the Cure, Big Black, Sonic Youth, the Jesus and Mary Chain, Faith No More and Massive Attack. Background In late 1977 and early 1978, Siouxsie and the Banshees received major press coverage but failed to secure a recording deal. A fan undertook a graffiti campaign in London, spraying the walls of the major record companies with the words "Sign the Banshees: do it now" ...

Happy House
"Happy House" is a song written by Siouxsie Sioux and Steven Severin and recorded by their band Siouxsie and the Banshees. It was released as a single in March 1980 by record label Polydor, then later included on the band's third album, ''Kaleidoscope''. "Happy House" was the group's first record made with guitarist John McGeoch and drummer Budgie. Background and recording "Happy House" and the ''Kaleidoscope'' album marked a change in musical direction for Siouxsie and the Banshees due to the arrival of two new musicians: drummer Budgie, previously of the Slits, and guitarist John McGeoch, previously of Magazine. Budgie, who was interested in African polyrhythms, used a reggae vibe on the song, while McGeoch played both atmospheric and edgy guitars. Siouxsie stated that the band almost invented a new sound with this single: It was "Banshees – phase two". When asked if "Happy House" was a cynical song, Siouxsie replied: "It is sarcastic. In a way, like television, all the ...

Rex's final album, ''Dandy in the Underworld'' (1977) Critical reception ''NMEs Roy Carr hailed the single and wrote: "If Ingmar Bergman produced records, they might sound like this. It demands to be played repeatedly at the threshold-of-pain volume to elicit its full nightmarish quality".
