''Mitt lille land'' ("My Little Country") is a 2011 album released by the Norwegian People's Aid and Sony Music as a memorial album for the 2011 Norway attacks. Its name is from the song '' Mitt lille land'' by Ole Paus and includes two versions of this song, performed by Maria Mena and Ole Paus. As of October 2011, it was the best-selling music album in Norway. Maria Mena
Maria Viktoria Mena (born 19 February 1986) is a Norwegian pop singer, best known for her singles such as " You're the Only One", "Just Hold Me", "All This Time" which charted in multiple countries. Early life Maria Mena was born into an artistic family. Her father is a drummer. There was a common misconception that her mother is a playwright, but Mena debunked this in an interview. Both Maria and her brother, Tony, are named after characters from Leonard Bernstein's ''West Side Story''. Her mother is Norwegian and her father is an American of Afro-Nicaraguan descent. Her father played in several bands in Oslo, which influenced Mena to write and record her own music. When Mena was nine years old, her parents divorced. Haddy Jatou Njie (formerly N'jie; born 25 June 1979 in Oslo) is a Norwegian singer, songwriter, writer and journalist. Her father is Gambian and her mother is Norwegian. She grew up in Kolbotn near Oslo and is the eldest of five siblings. Her younger sister is illustrator and picture book writer Lisa Aisato. ''Til ungdommen'' (English: "To the Youth"), also known by the words of the first line ''Kringsatt av fiender'' ("Surrounded by Enemies"), is a poem from 1936 by Norwegian poet and writer Nordahl Grieg (1902–1943) . It was set to music in 1952 by the Danish composer Otto Mortensen (1907–1986). The song has been recorded by various artists and has been sung at meetings held by various organizations. After the terror attacks of 22 July 2011, it was used in many memorial gatherings and services. History The poem was written in 1936 by Nordahl Grieg at Ny-Hellesund in Søgne for use by the Norwegian Students' Society after a request by Trond Hegna (1898–1992) who was a Member of Parliament. The song gained strong popularity following the 2011 Norway attacks, which led to it being described by the media as "the new national anthem." The 2011 Norway attacks, referred to in Norway as 22 July ( no, 22. juli) or as 22/7, were two domestic terrorist attacks by neo-Nazi Anders Behring Breivik against the government, the civilian population, and a Workers' Youth League (AUF) summer camp, in which 77 people were killed. The first attack was a car bomb explosion in Oslo within Regjeringskvartalet, the executive government quarter of Norway, at 15:25:22 (CEST). The bomb was placed inside a van next to the tower block housing the office of the then Prime Minister Jens Stoltenberg. The explosion killed eight people and injured at least 209 people, twelve severely.
