The mistral ( ca, Mestral, el, Μαΐστρος, it, Maestrale, mt, Majjistral, Corsican: ''Maestrale'') is a strong, cold, northwesterly wind that blows from southern France into the Gulf of Lion in the northern Mediterranean. It produces sustained winds often exceeding , sometimes reaching . It is most common in the winter and spring, and strongest in the transition between the two seasons. Periods of the wind exceeding for more than sixty-five hours have been reported. In France, it refers to a violent, cold, north or northwest wind that accelerates when it passes through the valleys of the Rhône and the Durance Rivers to the coast of the Mediterranean around the Camargue region. It affects the northeast of the plain of Languedoc and Provence to the east of Toulon, where it is felt as a strong west wind. Jacques Mistral
Jacques Mistral (born September 22, 1947) is a French economist and professor. He is a member of the Council of Economic Analysis (''Conseil d'analyse économique'') in France, a member of the Cercle des économistes, and as of October 2009, a member of the scientific council of the center-right think tank ''Fondation pour l'innovation politique''. Early life Mistral was born in Toulouse, France. He graduated from the École Polytechnique in Paris in 1967 and earned his Ph.D. in Economics from the University of Paris I in 1977. Career Mistral has held several professorships: from 1978 to 1992, he was a professor of economics at Université Paris-Nord; from 1974 to 1992, at ENSAE; from 1984 to 1994, at the École Polytechnique; and from 1982 to 1996, at Sciences Po. ''Le Mistral'', or the ''Mistral'', was an express train between Paris and Nice in France. Introduced in 1950, it was operated by the ''Société Nationale des Chemins de fer français'' ("French National Railway Corporation") ( SNCF), and was regarded as the company's flagship train. The train was named after the Mistral, a strong, cold and usually dry regional wind blowing from north or northwestern France to the coast of the Mediterranean around the Camargue region. History The ''Mistral'' began its existence in 1950 as a mostly steam locomotive-hauled ''Rapide'' (express train) between Paris-Gare de Lyon and Marseille-Saint-Charles. The Mistral One Design Class (MOD) is a windsurfing class chosen by the International Sailing Federation (ISAF) for use at the Olympic Regatta in Atlanta 1996, Sydney 2000 and Athens 2004. Agosta-class Submarine
The ''Agosta''-class submarine is a class of diesel-electric fast-attack submarine developed and constructed by the French DCNS in the 1970s to succeed the submarines. The submarines have served in the French Navy as well as exported to the navies of Spain and Pakistan. It also used by Royal Malaysian Navy for the training purpose. They were replaced in French service by the nuclear attack submarines but are still in active service with the navies of Spain and Pakistan.
