Mississippi Highway 547 (MS 547) is a state highway in southwestern Mississippi. The highway runs about long on a southeast to northwest direction, signed as a north–south route. It connects MS 28 at Allen with Pattison and U.S. Route 61 (US 61) in southern Port Gibson. Route description MS 547 begins at a four-way intersection with MS 28 and Ridgewood Lane in Allen, an unincorporated settlement in southwestern Copiah County. The two-lane state highway heads northwest through wooded lands (some of which officially part of Homochitto National Forest) with some open fields present along the road. After about , the highway enters Claiborne County. Continuing generally on a west-northwesterly course, MS 547 passes through the settlements of Burnell and Peyton and crosses Clarks Creek on a small bridge. Chamberlain-Hunt Academy
Chamberlain-Hunt Academy was a boarding school in Port Gibson, Mississippi. The school was founded in 1830 as Oakland College and closed in 2014. The campus, with its buildings in brick Georgian Revival style, is listed in the National Register of Historic Places. History Early history Oakland College was founded in Lorman, Mississippi in 1830 by the Reverend Jeremiah Chamberlain and the Presbyterian Church in Mississippi. Oakland closed during the Civil War but was reborn nearby in 1879 in historic Port Gibson, Mississippi as Chamberlain-Hunt Academy . When the "new" school was founded in Port Gibson in 1879, funds for the new beginning came from both the sale of the Oakland campus and donors. The State of Mississippi paid $40,000 for the campus in order to create Alcorn A&M College, the first land-grant college for African Americans in American history. McGregor (Port Gibson, Mississippi)
McGregor, now located on SR 547 in Port Gibson, Mississippi, is a country house built in 1835. It was designed in Greek Revival style. It is privately owned and not open to the public. The one-and-a-half story house was designed and/or built by planter and Judge Peter Aaron Van Dorn (1773-1837) for one of his daughters, likely as a wedding present. The gable-frame wooden residence in built on the center hall plan. The house has inset galleries along the north (front) and south (rear) facades. About 1850, an ell was added to the west facade. and ' Van Dorn was born in New Jersey in 1773, had a law degree from Princeton, and came to the Mississippi Territory at the age of twenty-one. He settled in Port Gibson about 1811, setting up a law practice, marrying, and getting involved in local civic affairs. The Natchez Trace Parkway is a national parkway in the southeastern United States that commemorates the historic Natchez Trace and preserves sections of that original trail. Port Gibson is a city in Claiborne County, Mississippi, United States. The population was 1,567 at the 2010 United States Census, 2010 census. Port Gibson is the county seat of Claiborne County, which is bordered on the west by the Mississippi River. It is the site of the Claiborne County Courthouse. The first European settlers in Port Gibson were French colonists in 1729; it was part of their ''La Louisiane''. After the United States acquired the territory from France in 1803 in the Louisiana Purchase, the town was chartered that same year.
