Miss France 2008
Miss France 2008, the 78th edition of the Miss France pageant, was held in Dunkirk, Nord-Pas-de-Calais on December 8, 2007. The ceremony was held at TF1, and was presented by Jean-Pierre Foucault and the Miss France Committee President Geneviève de Fontenay. Valérie Bègue of Réunion was crowned Miss France 2008 by the outgoing title-holder Rachel Legrain-Trapani of Picardy, Miss France 2007. Bègue was originally supposed to represent France at Miss World 2008 and Miss Universe 2008, but she was replaced by 2nd Runner-Up, Laura Tanguy of Pays de Loire after suggestive photos of Bègue were released to the public and Bègue refused to resign. A compromise was reached that allowed her to keep the title of Miss France 2008 but she was barred from crowning her successor the following year and was stripped of her right to represent France at any international beauty pageant. Valérie Bègue
Valérie Bègue (born 26 September 1985) is a French reality television personality and beauty pageant titleholder who won Miss France 2008, representing Réunion island, an overseas department of France located in the Indian Ocean. Bègue is the first Miss France from Réunion island since Monique Uldaric, who was elected in 1976. Miss Universe 2008
Miss Universe 2008 was the 57th Miss Universe pageant, held at the Crown Convention Center in Nha Trang, Vietnam on July 14, 2008. This was the first time that the Miss Universe pageant was broadcast in 1080i High-definition. At the end of the event, Riyo Mori of Japan crowned Dayana Mendoza as Miss Universe 2008. It is Venezuela's first victory in 12 years, and the fifth victory of the country in the pageant's history. Contestants from 80 countries and territories competed in this year's pageant. The pageant was hosted by Jerry Springer and member of the UK pop group Spice Girls Mel B. American singer-songwriter Lady Gaga performed in this year's pageant. The competition also featured the debut of the new CAO Fine Jewelry Crown, which was designed by the Phu Nhuan Jewelry Company and Vietnamese-American jewelry designer Rosalina Lydster. Laura Tanguy (born 2 August 1987 in Angers) is a French beauty pageant contestant who was awarded second runner-up of Miss France 2008, having lost to Valérie Bègue in the official scoring. She also competed for the regional preliminary qualifiers for Miss France 2009, and campaigned to represent France at the Miss World and Miss Universe competitions, wishing to recall Valérie Bègue, after suggestive photos were leaked in a magazine two weeks after her coronation. Biography Tanguy is the daughter of an engineer and a laboratory assistant in physics and chemistry. She fluently speaks both French English, having lived in San Antonio up until her adolesence.
