Miss America 2000, the 73rd Miss America pageant, was held at the Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City, New Jersey on Saturday, September 18, 1999 on ABC Network. Heather French became the first Miss Kentucky to win the crown. She later married the state's lieutenant governor, Steve Henry. Donny Osmond
Donald Clark "Donny" Osmond (born December 9, 1957) is an American singer, dancer, actor, television host, and former teen idol. He first gained fame performing with four of his elder brothers as the Osmonds, earning several top ten hits and gold albums. Then, in the early 1970s, Osmond began a solo career, earning several additional top ten songs. He further gained fame due to the success of the 1976–1979 variety series ''Donny & Marie''. The ''Donny & Marie'' duo also released a series of top ten hits and gold albums and hosted a syndicated and Daytime Emmy Award–nominated 1998–2000 talk show. Julie Smith (Miss Alabama)
Julie Smith West is an American beauty pageant titleholder from Birmingham, Alabama, who was named Miss Alabama 1999. Career Smith won the title of Miss Lake Harding 1997. Her two sisters also won qualifying pageants that year and were among the 45 women competing to become Miss Alabama 1997. Smith was crowned Miss Magic City 1998. She went on to tie for first place in the preliminary swimsuit competition then placed second runner-up at the 1998 Miss Alabama pageant. In 1999, Smith won the Miss Chattahoochee Valley title. Entering the 1999 Miss Alabama pageant as one of 47 finalists, Smith's preliminary competition talent for Miss Alabama was playing the marimba. Miss California
The Miss California competition selects the representative for the state of California in the Miss America competition. The pageant began in Santa Cruz in 1924 and was held there in 1925. During the years 1926 through 1946 in years when the Miss California pageant was held, the competition was primarily in San Francisco and Venice, California. In 1947, it returned to Santa Cruz and was held there annually until 1985, after which it moved to San Diego in response to years of protests and a "Myth California" counter pageant organized by local feminist activists led by Ann Simonton and Nikki Craft. Kelly Lloyd
Kelly Lloyd (born 1977 in Indianapolis) is an American model, consultant, attorney, and former beauty queen who has competed in the Miss Teen USA, Miss USA and Miss America pageants. She is one of only six women who have competed in these three pageants, and is known as a ''Triple Crown'' winner. Lloyd's first pageant title was Miss Indiana Teen USA 1993. She represented her state in the Miss Teen USA 1993 pageant broadcast live from Biloxi, Mississippi on August 10, 1993 and placed first runner-up. The pageant was won by Charlotte Lopez of Vermont. The Miss Indiana competition is the pageant that selects the representative for the state of Indiana in the Miss America Pageant. Elizabeth Hallal of Georgetown was crowned Miss Indiana 2022 on June 18, 2022 at STAR Bank Performing Arts Center in Zionsville. Miss New Hampshire
The Miss New Hampshire is the scholarship program that selects the representative for the state of New Hampshire in the Miss America competition. The Miss New Hampshire program was conducted by the '' Union Leader'' newspaper for more than 50 years. In the early years of Miss America, it was city newspapers that sponsored the young women to go to Atlantic City as the Miss America Organization originally allowed city titleholders to compete. The ''Union Leader'' conducted the pageant from 1947 until 2001. The newspaper held the pageant from at least 1985 to 2001 at the Manchester Central High School auditorium. Miss Virginia
The Miss Virginia competition is a scholarship pageant for women, with the titleholder representing Virginia in the Miss America pageant. The competition was founded in 1953 as a scholarship contest for young women, although women had represented Virginia in the Miss America pageant since the 1930s. Four Miss Virginia winners have gone on to be crowned Miss America, including former national titleholder Caressa Cameron. To compete in the Miss Virginia pageant, a contestant must first win one of many local competitions. Miss Louisiana
The Miss Louisiana competition is the pageant that selects the representative for the state of Louisiana in the Miss America pageant. Although no delegate from Louisiana has ever won the Miss America title, four have placed 1st runner-up. As of 2022, Louisiana is the lone member of the Confederacy during the Civil War which has not produced a Miss America. The pageant is held the last week of June at the W. L. The Miss Rhode Island competition is the pageant that selects the representative for the state of Rhode Island in the Miss America pageant. Miss Nevada
The Miss Nevada competition is the pageant that selects the representative for the state of Nevada in the Miss America competition, and the name of the title held by that winner. The first Nevadan to compete at Miss America was Carol Lampe in 1949. The competition currently takes place in South Lake Tahoe. Other venues have included Reno, Elko, Las Vegas, Carson City and Mesquite. It has at various times been hosted by the Reno Lions Club and the Soroptimist club of Nevada. Miss America Award Winners
The most frequently presented Miss America awards are for preliminary talent and swimsuit. The talent award was introduced in 1936, and the swimsuit award in 1940. In the 2000s, preliminary awards for evening gown and interview were briefly introduced but were discontinued after two years as it was felt that they made the semi-finalists too predictable.
