Miss America 1978, the 51st Miss America pageant, was held at the Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City, New Jersey on September 10, 1977. The pageant was televised on CBS, making this the last Miss America Pageant broadcast (as of 2022) by CBS, and the only one from 1966 through 1996 not televised by NBC. Susan Perkins
Susan Perkins Botsford (born April 28, 1954), a native of Middletown, Ohio, was Miss America 1978. She has been a professional singer, spokesperson, and television reporter. Susan walked in the New York Marathon with the Achilles Club (which serves disabled and senior athletes) as a guide for an 80-year-old former Marine Colonel. She has participated in many volunteer activities supporting U.S. veterans, and in 2009 she toured Iraq with two other former Miss Americas. Perkins Botsford was selected to the panel of judges for the preliminary competition of the Miss America 2018 pageant. Personal life She married Alan C. Miss Pennsylvania
The Miss Pennsylvania competition is the pageant that selects the representative for the state of Pennsylvania in the Miss America pageant. Pennsylvania, including early years' city representatives, has won the Miss America crown on five occasions. Originally held in Hershey, the pageant moved to West Chester where pageants were held during the 1950s. The pageant was held in Altoona from 1974. In 1994, Easton was chosen as the new venue of the pageant and the date was shifted from June to May. In November 2008, the pageant was moved to the Pittsburgh area. In 2019, the competition moved to York, Pennsylvania. In the fall of 2018, the Miss America Organization terminated the Miss Pennsylvania organization's license as well as licenses from Florida, Georgia, New Jersey, New York, Tennessee, and West Virginia. Gail Brown
Gail Marjorie Brown ( Ziegler; born October 11, 1937) is an American former actress. She is best known for her role as Clarice Hobson on the NBC daytime soap opera '' Another World'' (1975–1986). She is the older sister of the late film actress Karen Black. Early years Brown was born Gail Ziegler and grew up in the Chicago suburb of Park Ridge, Illinois. She is a daughter of Elsie ( née Reif), a writer, and Norman Arthur Ziegler, an engineer and businessman. Brown graduated from Maine Township High School East in 1955. Her younger sister was actress Karen Black. Before she became a professional entertainer, she worked as a hatcheck girl, a typist, and a waitress. Frank DeFord
Benjamin Franklin Deford III (December 16, 1938 – May 28, 2017) was an American sportswriter and novelist. From 1980 until his death in 2017, he was a regular sports commentator on NPR's ''Morning Edition'' radio program. Deford wrote for ''Sports Illustrated'' magazine from 1962 until his death in 2017, and was a correspondent for the ''Real Sports with Bryant Gumbel'' television program on HBO. He wrote 18 books, nine of them novels. Miss West Virginia
The Miss West Virginia competition is the pageant that selects the representative for the U.S. state of West Virginia in the Miss America Pageant. In the fall of 2018, the Miss America Organization terminated the Miss West Virginia organization's license as well as licenses from Florida, Georgia, New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania, and Tennessee. The Miss America Organization reinstated the license to Shelley Nichols-Franklin of Martinsburg who was the former Executive Director of Miss Berkeley County (WV) between 2000 and 2019. Miss Virginia
The Miss Virginia competition is a scholarship pageant for women, with the titleholder representing Virginia in the Miss America pageant. The competition was founded in 1953 as a scholarship contest for young women, although women had represented Virginia in the Miss America pageant since the 1930s. Four Miss Virginia winners have gone on to be crowned Miss America, including former national titleholder Caressa Cameron. To compete in the Miss Virginia pageant, a contestant must first win one of many local competitions. Contestants may compete at the local and state level more than once, but having won a state title may only compete in the national Miss America competition one time.
