Misamis Oriental ( ceb, Sidlakang Misamis; tl, Silangang Misamis), officially the Province of Misamis Oriental, is a province located in the region of Northern Mindanao in the Philippines. Its capital, largest city and provincial center is the city of Cagayan de Oro, which is governed independently from the province. History In the 16th century, the people of the territory were obliged to pay tribute to Muslim rulers as the regional powerhouses converted to the Muslim faith. Lumads on the coast started converting into Islam or were displaced by other ethnic groups that converted earlier. Those in the interior retained their native faiths. Province of Cebu Misamis Oriental shared a history with Misamis Occidental of being part of the Province of Cebu during the Spanish colonial era. Claveria, officially the Municipality of Claveria ( ceb, Lungsod sa Claveria; tl, Bayan ng Claveria), is a 1st class municipality in the province of Misamis Oriental, Philippines. According to the 2020 census, it has a population of 52,478 people. It is the only landlocked municipality of Misamis Oriental. It is also the largest in terms of land area in the province. Jasaan, officially the Municipality of Jasaan ( ceb, Lungsod sa Jasaan; tl, Bayan ng Jasaan), is a 2nd class municipality in the province of Misamis Oriental, Philippines. According to the 2020 census, it has a population of 57,055 people. It is approximately east of the capital city of Cagayan de Oro. It borders on the municipalities of Villanueva, Claveria and Balingasag, while Macajalar Bay is to the west. Gingoog, officially the City of Gingoog ( ceb, Dakbayan sa Hingoog; fil, Lungsod ng Gingoog), is a 2nd class component city in the province of Misamis Oriental, Philippines. According to the 2020 census, it has a population of 136,698 people. Like other municipalities in the Philippines that retained Spanish-based orthography, the city name is spelled as ''Gingoog'' but is pronounced as or since it originated as a Binukid word. History The term Gingoog originally came from the word "Hingoog", which means "Goodluck", from a Lumad tribe of Manobo who settled in the area.
