Miranda Railway Station
Miranda railway station is located on the Cronulla line, serving the Sydney suburb of Miranda. It is served by Sydney Trains T4 line services. History Miranda station opened on 16 December 1939 when the Cronulla line opened from Sutherland to Cronulla. It initially had a goods siding. On 15 July 1985, the line between Gymea and Caringbah was duplicated with a new track laid north of the existing single line, with the platform converted to an island platform. By January 2005, an upgrade to the station including a lift was complete. In 2014, new station canopies were installed on the station platform. Miranda () is a suburb in southern Sydney, in the state of New South Wales, Australia. The suburb is known as a commercial centre for the southern suburbs. Miranda is 24 kilometres south of the Sydney central business district, in the Sutherland Shire. History Thomas Holt (1811–88) owned the land that stretched from Sutherland to Cronulla. James Murphy, the manager of the Holt estate named the area after Miranda, a character in the William Shakespeare play '' The Tempest''. In a 1921 letter, James Murphy said "the name Miranda was given to the locality by me as manager of the Holt Sutherland Company which I formed in 1881. I thought it a soft, euphonious, musical and appropriate name for a beautiful place." It is believed that the character in the play was named after Miranda de Ebro, a town in Spain. Port Hacking is a small bayside suburb located on the north shore of the Port Hacking estuary in southern Sydney, in the state of New South Wales, Australia. The suburb is situated 26.7 kilometres south of the Sydney central business district in the local government area of the Sutherland Shire. History The suburb name is the same as the name of the adjacent estuary. Thomas Holt (1811–88) owned most of the land that stretched from Sutherland to Cronulla, including land here. Lilli Pilli is a small suburb in southern Sydney, in the state of New South Wales, Australia. Lilli Pilli is located 26 kilometres south of the Sydney central business district, in the local government area of the Sutherland Shire. Gymea Bay
The Gymea Bay is a bay on the upper estuarine Port Hacking River, fed by the Coonong Creek in southern Sydney, in the state of New South Wales, Australia Location and features The bay, the locality, suburb of and the adjacent suburb of Gymea, were named after the Gymea Lily ''Doryanthes excelsa'', a tall perennial (up to 6m) that is prevalent in the area. The plant was called "Gymea" by the local Eora people and became the inspiration for the suburb's name, by government surveyor W.A.B. Geaves in 1855.
