Benjamin Blake Minor
Benjamin Blake Minor (October 21, 1818 – August 1, 1905) was an American writer, educator, legal scholar, and fourth President of the University of Missouri, from 1860-1862. Today, he is most known as the editor of the ''Southern Literary Messenger''. He also compiled the second edition of the reports of the decisions of George Wythe, published in 1852. Biography Benjamin Blake Minor was born in Tappahannock, Essex county, Virginia, on October 21, 1818. His parents were Dr. Hubbard Taylor Minor and Jane (Blake Minor). He attended Bristol College, Pennsylvania, during the sessions of 1833-34, the University of Virginia, 1834–37, graduating in several of its schools, and subsequently entered the College of William and Mary, graduating in moral and political science and law in the class of 1839. Charles Landon Carter Minor (December 3, 1835 – July 13, 1903) was the first president of the Virginia Agricultural and Mechanical College (now known as Virginia Tech), Virginia's new land-grant institution. Minor, a native of Hanover County, Virginia, held a master's degree from the University of Virginia and had served as combat and staff officer in the Confederate Army. During the Civil War, Minor served under General Stonewall Jackson and saw action at Manassas and in battles around Richmond. Prior to his appointment as president of VAMC he taught at Sewanee Episcopal Seminary in Tennessee. Ethel Minor (November 26, 1922 - June 25, 2012) was a political figure and civil rights activist. Minor was reared in Columbus, Texas and returned to San Antonio in 1944 to work at Kelly Air Force Base. During her time as a civilian working on the base, she was a fighter for equal treatment of employees. Along with local civil rights leaders such as the Rev. Claude Black, Harry Burns, G J Sutton, Charles Hudspeth and others, Ms. Minor participated in marches and protests throughout Bexar County. As a young man, Robert Minor worked as a bookkeeper in New York City but decided to study art in his early thirties. After studying in New York with painter Alfred Cornelius Howland, Minor went abroad in 1871 to continue his artistic education.
