Minne-Ha-Ha II
The ''Minne-Ha-Ha'' is a sternwheel steamboat on Lake George, New York, and is owned and operated by the Lake George Steamboat Company. Background During the 1950s and 1960s, the Lake George Steamboat Company owned and operated two ships on Lake George: the ''Ticonderoga II'', a retired navy ship from World War II, and the ''Mohican II'', a converted steamer (to diesel) that was built by the company between 1907 and 1908. Lake George ( moh, Kaniá:taro’kte), nicknamed the ''Queen of American Lakes'', is a long, narrow oligotrophic lake located at the southeast base of the Adirondack Mountains, in the northeastern portion of the U.S. state of New York. The Village of Lake George is a village within the town of Lake George in Warren County, New York, United States, located at the southern end of its namesake lake. Ticonderoga (, moh, Tekaniataró:ken) is a town in Essex County, New York, United States. The population was 5,042 at the 2010 census. The name comes from the Mohawk ''tekontaró:ken'', meaning "it is at the junction of two waterways". The Town of Ticonderoga is in the southeastern corner of the county and is south of Plattsburgh. A calliope (see below for pronunciation) is an American and Canadian musical instrument that produces sound by sending a gas, originally steam or, more recently, compressed air, through large whistles—originally locomotive whistles. A calliope is typically very loud. Even some small calliopes are audible for miles. There is no way to vary tone or loudness. Musically, the only expression possible is the pitch, rhythm, and duration of the notes. The steam calliope is also known as a steam organ (''orgue à vapeur'' in Quebec) or steam piano (''piano à vapeur'' in Quebec). The air-driven calliope is sometimes called a calliaphone, the name given to it by Norman Baker, but the "Calliaphone" name is registered by the Miner Company for instruments produced under the Tangley name.
