The Government of Maharashtra is the state governing authority for the state of Maharashtra, India. It is a democratically elected government with 288 MLAs elected to the Vidhan Sabha for a five-year term. Maharashtra has a Maharashtra Legislature which consists of two Houses, the Vidhan Sabha (Legislative Assembly) and the Vidhan Parishad (Legislative Council). As is the case in a parliamentary system, the government is formed by the party, alliance or group of assembly members who command the majority in the Lower House. The Lower House majority leader becomes the Chief Minister and selects the cabinet members from both Houses. In case an unelected person becomes the Chief Minister, they must be elected to either House within the following six months. Balasaheb Desai
Balasaheb Desai (born as Daulatrao Shripatrao Desai on 10 March 1910 in Village Vihe, Tal Patan, Satara district) was a leading politician and social worker from Maharashtra, India and held important positions in the Maharashtra State Government as home minister, education minister, and cultural minister during the initial formation of the Maharashtra state. He was instrumental in establishing Shivaji University in Kolhapur in 1962. Career Initially Desai started his law practice in Patan, Karad, Satara district. In 1940 he campaigned for election to the District Local Board and was elected president. In 1952 he was elected as the Member of the Legislative Assembly (MLA) from Patan and was re-elected in 1957. Nihal Ahmed Maulavi Mohammed Usman
Nihal Ahmed Maulavi Mohammed Usman, also known as Nihal Sahab or Sathi Nihal Ahmed or Nihalbhai, was an Indian socialist leader and politician belonging to Janata Dal (Secular). He was a former Minister of government of Maharashtra and legislator of the Maharashtra Legislative Assembly from 1960 until 1999. He was also the first mayor of the Malegaon Municipal Corporation. He died on 29 February 2016 at a private hospital in Nashik at the age of 90 following age-related ailments. He had been admitted to the hospital the night before due to respiratory problems. Vasantrao Banduji "Vasantdada" Patil (13 November 1917 – 1 March 1989) was an Indian politician from Sangli, Maharashtra. He was known as the first modern Maratha strongman and first mass leader in Maharashtrian politics. Patil served as Chief Minister of Maharashtra from 17 May 1977 to 18 July 1978 and again from 2 February 1983 to 1 June 1985. He also served as the Governor of Rajasthan for a little under two years from 1985 to 1987. Personal life Born on 13 November 1917 at 'Padmale' from Sangli, his native village. Shankarrao Chavan was appointed as Chief Minister of Maharashtra for the first time on 21 February 1975, replacing Vasantrao Naik. His first ministry lasted till 16 April 1977, and was succeeded by Vasantdada Patil's ministry.
