The Ministry of Economy ( he, משרד הכלכלה, ''Misrad HaKalkala'') is a ministry of the Israeli government that oversees commerce, industry and labor in Israel. History The ministry was established in 1948 as the Ministry of Commerce and Industry. In 1977 the Tourism Ministry post was added to it, becoming the Ministry of Industry, Trade, and Tourism. However, the merger was reversed in 1981 and the office was renamed Ministry of Industry and Trade. Labor, which had been merged with the Welfare Ministry in the 1970s, was appended to the portfolio in 2003. The Cabinet of Israel (officially: he, ממשלת ישראל ''Memshelet Yisrael'') exercises executive authority in the State of Israel. It consists of ministers who are chosen and led by the prime minister. The composition of the government must be approved by a vote of confidence in the Knesset (the Israeli parliament). Under Israeli law, the prime minister may dismiss members of the government, but must do so in writing, and new appointees must be approved by the Knesset. Most ministers lead ministries, though some are ministers without portfolio. Most ministers are members of the Knesset, though only the Prime Minister and the " designated acting prime minister" are required to be Knesset members. Some ministers are also called deputy and vice prime ministers. Unlike the designated acting prime minister, these roles have no statutory meanings. Ze'ev Sherf
Ze'ev Sherf ( he, זאב שרף, 21 April 1904 – 18 April 1984) was an Israeli politician who held several ministerial portfolios in the 1960s and 1970s. Biography Born in Czernowitz in Austria-Hungary (today Chernivtsi, Ukraine), Sherf made aliyah in 1925. He was a member of Poale Zion's youth movement, and was a founder of the "Socialist Youth" movement. During World War II he was a member of the Haganah command, and following the war, worked for the Jewish Agency for Israel for two years. In 1947 he was appointed secretary of the Situation Committee, which helped create the administrative apparatus of the new state. Following independence, he served as secretary of the government until 1957. In the 1965 elections he was voted into the Knesset on the Alignment's list. Ran Cohen ( he, רן כהן, born 20 June 1937) is an Israeli politician and former Knesset member for Meretz. Background Born Said Cohen in Baghdad, Iraq, Cohen was 13 years old when he immigrated to Israel through Iran. He hebraized his first name after his arrival in Israel, renaming himself "Ran". Moshe Nissim ( he, משה נסים, born 10 April 1935) is a former Israeli politician, minister and Deputy leaders of Israel#Deputy Prime Minister, Deputy Prime Minister. Biography Moshe Nissim was born in Mandatory Palestine. He studied law at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem and served as an Officer of Justice in the Israel Defense Forces during his national service. Yigal Hurvitz ( he, יִגָּאֵל הורביץ; 15 October 1918 – 10 January 1994) was an Israeli politician who served as a government minister in the late 1970s and 1980s. Biography Hurvitz was born in Nahlat Yehuda (today part of Rishon LeZion) in 1918.
